High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

Believe me, binghamton is just awful. Rochester is fabulous by comparison. Lol.

Congratulations to all DS and DD who have made their college/university choices!

It's very interesting to read through this thread and see many other families having the same conversations that are going on here at my house. My DS applied to RPI, WPI, University of NH, Dartmouth and Williams. He was accepted to the first 3 and wait listed for the last 2. Much back and forth over RPI, WPI and UNH with it coming down to WPI and UNH. WPI is $60,000 a year with UNH $30,000. We had the "which school will give you better connections" conversation as well has "How much debt do you want to have" conversations. It's hard when they work so hard and do all the right stuff to get into the college of their dreams to then have to worry about being in major debt after graduating. DS finally made his choice after visiting the UNH campus. He loved it! UNH is the choice! He was accepted into the Honors Program there and he won't have to sell his soul to pay for it.

Congrats!! My DD is in her honors college and got in the freshman Honors dorm as well-got the roommate and floor she wanted too. I have to say the freshman Honors dorm is really really really nice (fully redone with basically no expense spared 3 years ago-the previous honors kids were asked what would have made the dorm their "dream" dorm and pretty much everything was incorporated!). Looking at the budget this school is way way more wallet friendly too.

--this is really the heart wrenching part!

Just deposited. Now she just has to reject the other schools and write one thank you note (very helpful professor at a school she decided to reject) and it looks like we can go college shopping. Lol.

So glad to hear that. Is she feeling relieved? I know you must be!

What school is she at? I hope it is televised on ESPN-I like to watch the competitions!!

Still waiting on full financial aid package from DD school, but she did get approved for 90% instate tuition-makes going to an out of state school much much more affordable!. Plus she found out nearly all her college credits she has accumulated past couple years will transfer-now here is hoping they work with her major and that is nearly a year less of school to pay for!
Her Lunar research team made the final four - so now she and the team have to go in Friday (no school for students as it is a teacher work day) to present. She hasn't made the end of her senior year easy...

I believe they will have a live feed of Worlds but I'm sure it will cost something.

My DD did her placement test yesterday and has the overnight visit in June.
May is a busy month for seniors with Awards night, Senior Banquet, Prom, Skip Day ..
Now we are planning her Graduation Party for the weekend after graduation.
Move in day for college is August 27.

We just booked our flights for move-in weekend which is August 18th. My daughter did the online math placement test and already registered for classes. It's getting real!

Dd recieved her choir scholarship/acceptance letter yesterday. We knew it was coming but just makes it all very real. The letter included information about traveling to NYC.in the fall. Dd is getting so excited about college. But also a little nervous. Her group of friends are all going in different directions after years of talking about all going to school together. Different opportunities and different goals just led everyone to different places.

Next weekend is prom. Another stressor. 6 girls all trying to decide on where and when to eat, when and where to do pictures and where to go after prom. Lol I told them they should just let the guys decide, they wouldn't stress out so much.

Then its only 2 weeks until graduation and between the two is choir banquet, senior banquet, awards night, skip day, the annual senior gathering to float the creek and another gathering at a local restaurant. And finally after graduation we are heading to Universal Studios for 4 days. Going to be a whirlwind few weeks.

I have no idea when DD has to take placement tests. We have no forms from the college yet.

Look on the student portal online. It is probably listed somewhere there what she needs to do and when. I know DD has an online math placement test that has to be completed before her orientation date.

Senioritis has hit with a vengeance! I can't get DD to do anything and I have another month and a half of this until graduation. I just hope her grades don't plummet.

Yep Senioritis has hit a lot of dd's classmates. I am so glad she did her schedule the way she did this year. This last nine weeks is MS studies, driver's ed, choir and psychology online. She took the remainder of her required and harder classes last semester or the previous 9 weeks. Just kinda floating on through to the end.

Her friend is taking Eng IV and is smack dab in the middle of her huge essay that is due soon and is the difference in passing or failing the class. Stress level is huge and procrastination is an issue too. They know their GPAs have already been determined and sent to their respective colleges and its hard to stay motivated.

Last night was their last a capella concert. At the end I cried. They cried. The director cried. But they had a good time, relaxed and had fun on stage. I have been telling her to enjoy every moment and that believe it or not, she will miss that old school. Its funally sinking in.

Ugh - someone is failing AP bio due to 3 missing assignments!

Join the club. I'm sure her grades will slip a bit but I guess it is just normal. I keep telling her only 38 more days of school.

Right there with you, but it was AP Gov. So many missing things we got a note from the school. She sat here for about 12 hours until it was all done. The teacher took pity on her (I'm not sure why) and her grade went up over 20 points after they were added in. Bullet dodged.. but really??

Looks like it's RIT for the win here. She visited CMU which would cost 2x as much and just didn't love it like she thought she would (phew!) I think she's also starting to realize that there are more perks than downsides to staying near home. It's definitely not the "best" program she got in to, but it's "affordable" and a good fit for her right now.

Does her offer of admission have a sentence similar to: "your admission is contingent upon your continued strong academic performance"?
I don't think so. His GPA at the end of last marking period was 3.4, and I'm sure he won't fail the class (he will turn the assignments in late, he had a b every marking period). I never went through this with dd19 (who's correct GPA is 3.8).

I just see him slacking off.

We are really ready for graduation, and there is a month to go. DD has been doing fine in all her classes (all As at the half-trimester mark) and has decided on college, but she has had to cope with several of her "friends" ostracizing her for no real reason. Apparently, the leader and "head mean girl" of her group of friends decided that she didn't like DD's choice of college- mainly because DD chose to attend a school out of the state and on a great scholarship when the other friends all failed to get accepted at their first choice, out of state schools and are settling for the state school instead. She has had to listen to them all tell her she will hate this college and that she is wrong for leaving them.

Head Mean Girl started totally ignoring DD and bullied the other girls into doing it, too. She told me a little bit of what is going on when I noticed she seemed a bit sad lately. She said she doesn't understand why they are all being so mean, since she has always been supportive of their decisions. She got frozen out of Prom (luckily, an old friend from home went with her- they had fun) and has been pretty lonely around campus with very few kids to hang around with. She told me she doesn't mind too much, but I know this is putting a damper on what should be a great time for her.

Sometimes being the mom of a teenaged girl really stinks! I don't know how to make her feel better, and I would love to give those girls a piece of my mind (but I won't).

Only 31 days until she graduates and is done with the drama...
