High School class of 2011

It sounds like it's doable. The thing is that even though you have alot of need, they school does not have to meet that need. At most state schools, they do not meet your need. It is very few schools that actually will profess to meet your need and all of those schools require a seperate FA form called the profile.

The FAFSA only determines if you qualify for a Pell grant or money from the Federal government, not what the college will actually give you or what you will need to pay.

It does sound like with everything she has already been awarded, she will be able to go to that school.

If she doesn't get work study, don't worry there are other jobs she can apply for. For example jobs with the cafeteria. She will have to look but she should be able to find something, maybe at the campus Subway or some place like that.

You can also get Parent PLUS loans and not pay on them until after her graduation. Interest will still accrue but it can be done. Be very careful with any loans that she takes. They do have to be paid back and be mindful of what kind of job she will be able to find after she graduates.

My kids both have loans, but they (hopefully) will make enough money that loan payments will not be a large part of their income after school is over.

I'm hoping she will get a job at someplace that would be transferable, like Publix or Home Depot. That might actually be more flexible than on campus work. We cannot take out a Parent PLUS loan--we live on a fixed income, a very low fixed income. There is *no way* we could repay that loan. I'm having heart failure over co-signing her Stafford loans. Of course, DD understands that SHE will be responsible for paying off her own loans. And i am hoping that she will be able to get her GPA up to 3.0 by next summer so she can be eligible for the HOPE which would pay about 90% of tuition.

We have talked with her at length about managing her student loan debt. She's going to major in theater, at least for now. If she's like a lot of freshmen, she'll likely change that major at least, so who knows what she will actually be doing when she graduates. DD has a steady head on her shoulders and she is frugal to a fault. I'm hoping she can graduate with less than $25,000 student loan debt.

DD applied and was accepted last fall. We got our FAFSA done Feb2. This is a state school, one of the less expensive ones in the state. I called the school today to ask about the work-study. The guy told me that they have very limited WS positions--120 jobs for the 5,000 students who qualified. I just laid my cards on the table--DD needs as much financial aid as humanly possible. He put her on a waiting list--she's #9--so that's a hopeful sign. If someone drops out, she might get on.

I took another look at the package today(i was making myself sick over it all weekend.) It looks like the estimated tuition, fees, books, housing, and meal plan is going to run about $7200/semester. Her award--Pell grant, SEOG grant, Subsidized & Unsubsidized Stafford loans--come to about $5,725. So, it's looking better. I think she can come up with the $1300+ that she needs to start. DD has some money saved and she will be getting her SSDI until Apr 2012. So I'm feeling a lot better about it all. I'm hoping she can get a job at our local water park--her friend works there as a life guard and she's hoping that DF can get her on. Crossing my fingers.

It sounds like it will work out in the end. Good luck.

AP Calculus Exam today. DS has 9 more school days left. Last night was his last Honors Banquet. Friday night he will be playing in possibly his last baseball game, it's the regional tournament and if they don't win they are done and if they do win they will go on to the state tournament. I know I sound like a broken record but this is happening too fast! :sad2:

Thanks cruisnfamily for telling me about this thread :)

My dd18 will be going to college this fall. So Now I have another thread to read and share the joy and fear ... ( since this my only child the empty nest syndrome is already hitting me hard)

Welcome! I live in Northern Virginia, but really miss the Roanoke area--spent 4 great years at Tech and several years afterward working there. Roanoke College was a popular choice among my son's friends this year.

So he has prom this weekend and he just told me yesterday that his girlfriend and the other girls in the group they were going with decided not to go. I asked why and he just said, "She's a hipster." and shrugged. So I'm not sure what he's going to do now. He said he would just find another group to go with. He doesn't seem bothered, but that's how he is.

He has two more AP tests next week, but they go until end of June and they do work right to the end. He is so ready to be done.

Roanoke College?? DS#1 was accepted there , it was just beautiful.. loved the area.. college was just wonderful.. but he opted to be closer to home..

So DD went to Grad Bash last weekend and didn't get home until 6am on Sunday!:scared1:

Prom is May 14th and she decided to break up with her boyfriend of 2 years. Talk about awkward! I guess they're both going to still go but not with each other.

Graduation is June 3rd but she'll be home all summer and doesn't start classes until August 22nd. A lot of her friends are going to their respective colleges for summer session classes but she is not.

Our graduation is on our hs football field at 8pm on a Friday night but everybody says you need to get there at like 6pm because it's open seating, first come first seated....don't know what we're going to do about that yet.

Finished Graduation Announcements last night pictures stuffed, addressed, sealed, and stamped. Putting them in the mail today, I will say I have been dreading doing these. So I am happy to say that this particular item is checked off my list. We are down to 17 days till graduation and DS only has 8 more school days left.

Yesterday was Calculus A/B, right now (this morning) is English Lit with Latin this afternoon. Last AP is next Tuesday morning for Gov.

And after that there's not much else...other than catching up on sleep perhaps.

We're doing the Grad announcements ourselves, will probably send them out sometime around the 20th of this month (graduation isn't until June 17th). DD will be able to relax and think a little bit once the APs are *finally* over, she has some ideas about printing out the announcements herself. We won't be sending out a lot, maybe 20 at the most and will probably just be sending them to close relatives (my immediate family) and a very few friends. I'd like to let people know that she's graduating, but the tickets are somewhat restricted and we won't be having a party so don't want to seem to "gift-grub".

Lest people think she's being deprived of a rite-of-passage/party/good time, we are going to WDW (instead of a party) the day after graduation ::yes::.
agnes!

Yeah, I think the family BBQ sounds like a great idea. But dont' be surprised if he wants to go hang with his buds. Still, the rest of you can have a good time, a little family reunion. Our graduation is May 27, the Friday before Memorial Day, at 7pm. We are limited to 4 tickets, so it will be me & DH, DS24 and the one Grandma who can come. I was going to let DD18 have a sleep over, but decided maybe not a good idea. I think she and her BFFs have plans for an after-grad party. We're having a graduation pool party on Saturday, May 28, with pizza, fruit & veggie trays, and cupcakes. There are 3 girls in her group that are graduating, so we parents are doing a joint party. They have a lot of friends in common, too. Drama kids, band kids, film kids, dance kids. It will be a good mix. And it will be fun for the relatives who can't go to graduation.

So, I need to get cracking on the announcements first. I'm not in a rush, though. These aren't invitations to the graduation so it doesn't matter if they go out the week before. More pressing is the 100 cupcakes that the girls want at their party. DD has chosen a nice Key Lime cupcake, a Strawberry-Cream Cheese cupcake,a Pina Colada cupcake, and a plain yellow cake/choc icing w/sprinkles cupcake for those who don't like other flavors. I figure if I get started this weekend i can freeze them all up and then frost them later. My mom will be coming up for the graduation, so I'll put her to work frosting cupcakes.:goodvibes

Happy Mother's Day everyone!!! I hope everyone is having a great day! Graduation is 2 weeks from today. After church today, DS and I went shopping for graduation clothes. It was really nice getting to spend a few hours with just him. That doesn't happen very often. Now my DH is fixing supper, wonderful day! :goodvibes

Last AP exam for DD tomorrow morning...AP US Gov.

agnes!

Well I guess the end is near.. got the letter for buying the linens and stuff from the school.. ( sigh)
BTW - Kohl and Bed, bath and Beyond have a sale on college dorm linens ( extra long) in July.. DS#1 said that the school package was crummy and the kids he knew went to BBB /Kohl/Target and got the stuff again as the ones in the package were corse and not good qualiy.. could be just his school tho.. but i am getting DS#2 stuff later this year..

Well, carp. Found out today we can't have the party at the pool. That leaves my house(which is only big enough for our family) or the BFFs house, which is big but they don't really want to have the party there. I'm trying to make this a low-key party. We moms are going to have to put our heads together and come up with a Plan B pretty quick. Graduation is May 27. The party is May 28. The BFF leaves for France June 1. So we dont' have much wiggle room.

What about the park? BBQ, volleyball, water ballons? Lots of kids do that here.

Today was the seniors last real day of school. DS is still at school. Even on the last day he won't leave before 10! They are rehearsing for the last concert. At least his finial is not tomorrow. He only has to take one (they are exempt if they have an A) and it is Thursday.

Yeah, I've got to get together with the other mom and see what they want to do.

We don't get dorm assignments until July, which seems really late considering they move in 12/13 August. Not all dorms have XL beds and some dorms have microfridges included, so we'll have to wait until July to do that kind of shopping.

minky--maybe a community clubhouse? Most of our developments here have something like that you can rent out for a few hours.
