High School class of 2011

Can anyone recommend a good printer for a college student. DS doesn't want anything too big and I want the ink refills to be reasonably priced.

A couple suggestions-towels, get white so they can bleach them with their white bleachable clothing (fill out the load). Sheets, get them in a color that will work with most of their clothing, again to fill out the load. DS18 has a lot of jeans and navy sports pants so we got navy sheets.

Another suggestion, think about getting some of the "stuff" when you get there, especially any consumable stuff like laundry detergent, food, soap, contact solution, etc. It will save room in the car. We even wished we would have waited to buy DS's futon until we got there so we didn't have to pack that along with everything else.

If they will be home before the weather changes, send the next season's clothing then.

You might want to wait on that. When I asked around at our last campus visit, I was told that a lot of teachers don't even require printed papers anymore at DD's university, the students submit using memory-sticks or through a dropbox. You might want to check with your DS' roommates - maybe the kids could possibly share a printer? Also at DD's school they don't do wireless printing, if you do decide to bring a printer then make sure they have the direct-to-printer cables.

agnes!

Good advice. DS#1 shared a printer with his roommate first year. But most papers were emailed to prof. Next year he wont even bring a printer.

DS#2 dorm has a printer. They say to just bring paper. But ds will have his one for the suite.he also has a 4 gig use stick.

Regarding a printer.. DD is able to print 100 pages per day, 20 each in 5 different locations on campus. Those ink cartridges are ridiculous and the cheaper ones don't last as long. I am going to encourage her to print on campus.

We have been to orientation and gotten registered for classes. The 4 year nursing curriculum is a death march; much more rigorous than the curriculum when DH and I went to nursing school. She has to take 9 credit hours this next summer and has required, for credit, internships the summer after sophomore and junior year. She placed into Calculus but only is required to take Algebra, so we are going to have her take the Algebra class (this was her advisor recommendation as well) and also take Nutrition this fall at the local community college as a night class. This will bring her to 19 credits and she will cut back her hours at work. She will then only have to take 2 courses during the summer instead of 3, Microbiology and one liberal arts requirement. She should be able to knock these both out in the Spring session and have the summer session free.

She applied for a 3 week paid internship for employee's children at the hospital where DH works. She begins that on Monday and is very excited. :cheer2: She has her wisdom teeth out this coming Friday morning and she is not excited about that. :worried:

Things have been rough around here. Something happened on DD's Prom day, long story, and not really sure if it was intentional or not. DD's BF and his mother were almost 2 hours late (and we really weren't even sure they were coming), and I have no pictures of DD in her dress with her group and no decent ones of her due to all the crying and drama. DD and BF have since broken up and while his events all went splendidly since they were a week earlier, hers were awful. I'm really upset about this as this is our only child. :sad2: We now have been going through several weeks of all the "whys" and trying to help her move on. I hope she is able to regroup before school starts so she doesn't miss out on the opportunities to make new friends available to her when school starts. She and the exBF are, of course, headed to the same very small school.

I have really enjoyed this thread and getting to know all of you. It has been helpful to me to go through this process with you all. Best wishes to all of everyone's children this fall.

I would get a cheepo printer at Walmart, etc. Even with dorm printers, etc. it's nice to have one in your room, especially late at night or if you just don't want to go down to the printer--and ESPECIALLY at finals time when everyone else is trying to print stuff. DS18 had one and was very glad he did. His was wireless and he and his roommate both used it. Even some of his friends from down the hall would print to his printer at times. Yes, a lot of his stuff was sent electronically but not all of it-especially the larger papers, etc. because those are too hard to read on a computer.

We sent DS with 4 b/w and 4 color cartridges (he had a Dell printer and we ordered them with the printer) and he went through one full set and part of a second.

Hi everyone, I hope your all having a great summer. We move DS to college 6 weeks from today.:sad2: I just can't believe how fast summer is going. We still don't know who DS's roommate is, but DS got an email from school saying they are mailing out room info on the 15th so I guess in a little over a week we will know.

We have bought several things, but I have been waiting on back to school sales for a lot of it, adding ream of paper to growing dorm room list.

My DD moves in 6 weeks from today too!

And today we went out and bought a 2.7cu ft fridge for her dorm room. Had a 12% off coupon and a $30 reward coupon from best buy so I got the $150 fridge for $100. I actually didn't think it would cost anywhere near that! I was expecting the mini-fridges to be like $75. Guess I was wrong!

Has anyone gotten their AP scores back? DS took 5 tests this spring and I am not a patient person! lol :upsidedow

He is on a mission trip in NY atm, so I cannot get him to log-in and check his school records to see if they got it!

Are you talking high school log-in or college log-in? If you know his college log-in, try looking under transfer credits or something similar on their site. At any rate, you should get them by mail very soon. College Board generally mails west coast to east, and parts of CA, NV, WA, NM, and OR got scores today.

Good to know-we are anxiously awaiting scores here for our twins.

Maybe ours will come tomorrow! They didn't come today. My oldest's scores are on his college website. (70 credits woohooo!) My younger son only took one AP class and we are waiting for that.

DD did not need a physical
Nobody has mentioned Gardasil(although DD did have the series)
We did need to have the doctor send over her immunization record and we did that quite a while ago. I don't recall whether it was just for admittance to the university or whether it was for housing. But either way, we sent it in and she's all set.

We had to get the shots done before he registered for classes. I expected the meningitis, which was mandatory and he chose to get the hepatitis as well, but I was surprised that he had to get the second chicken pox dose. He had one dose when he was four, then he got the chicken pox, so I didn't bother having him do the second dose. Because it had not been verified in the office that he'd had the chicken pox, he had to get the second dose or get the blood test for the varicella titer. He just went ahead and got the shot.

Wow--very impressive!

We're at 5 weeks now, I swear it can't come soon enough for him.

Ours have not arrived in the mail yet, but DD was in touch with her high-school teachers today who were able to check & they told her she received 4s on her tests. More college credit!

Thanks for the posts!

You've reminded me that she also already has:
Small tool kit
Cleaning Wipes
boom box with ipod dock
Laundry hamper
Laundry basket
TV(got it for her for Christmas, she's never had a TV in her room before!)

And my "still need" list has increased to:
Sheets
Towels
Wastebasket
Umbrella
dry erase board for door
toiletries/meds(otc + first aid)
Laptop(this is a graduation gift from us, just haven't bought it yet)
Area Rug

Thanks for the posts of supplies!
I am now adding to my "needs" list:
Small Fridge
Printer
Ream of paper
Cable for TV (to hook up the cable)

Last week we bought:
Small Fridge

So today we went shopping and bought:
Fuzzy pink area rug for bedroom
Monkey Toothbrush holder for bathroom
2 towels, 2 washclothes
small dry erase board for door
desk calendar
Jansport neon pink/coral backpack

We have quite a pile growing in our back room! And that doesn't even include her clothes!

Still need:
Laptop
Printer
ream of paper/ink cartridges
Cables for laptop/printer
Cable for TV
Sheets!!!
Wastebasket
Storage cube to double as nightstand
first aid/otc meds
Flashlight
Umbrella

Less than 6 weeks.

The fees for tuition posted to her account on Friday. The housing fees are supposed to post Monday. I checked with FL prepaid and her local scholarship to see how the money would arrive and when.

Still need to purchase the meal plan and buy the books. Although she is registered for class, the book lists have not been released yet.

How's everybody else doing?

Who uses bleach? :confused3 We bought pink, aqua and orange towels today, (one of each). We wash things together in cold and never use bleach. Besides the fact my DD would die if she had to use "boring" white towels Lol!

You don't separate your clothing-so you wash whites with navy??? We use bleach on white cotton stuff (socks, white undies, etc.).

Well, let's put it this way. *I* use bleach on my whites. DD18 pretty much throws her stuff in the washer however she wants to. Lucky for her, most of her clothes are dark. I will not be sending bleach with her to college.

depends on my mood and how much laundry I have....so yes, I would wash whites with navy. As long as it's not brand new it's not a big deal. :confused3 I usually separate lights and darks, but never do I have a load that is just white things. I just wash things in cold water and things are fine.

Same here. I almost always wash with cold and am careful if something is brand new and hasn't been washed before. But I never use bleach.
