High School class of 2011

We are waiting a few more weeks on AP scores. Actually, one of them she will find out on the 5th because her calculus teacher is calling everyone once she finds out the scores. In hindsight, my daughter should have asked her other two teachers if they would do the same. Her bio teacher lives around the corner from us---maybe I can convince my daughter to go take several walks a day by her house to see if she can catch her outside. (jk--that would be kind of creepy stalking her like that). Once she does find out her bio score, if it is good enough, we have to see if she will need to change her schedule. She is registered for bio in college as it is required of her major. I know they encourage pure biology majors to take bio anyhow, regardless of the AP score, but her major is slighly different.

Roommate will be assigned August 1. They do not do a big involved roommate survey, but one of the three questions does involve smoking. That would be a deal breaker for my daughter, too. Basically, in my daughter's school, almost every freshman takes a small seminar class, and they try to pair those people up.

I'm so happy with my daughter's class sizes. Her largest class, bio, is capped at 40. Her seminar is 16 students, her Spanish class is at 10 students right now, and although I forget the number enrolled in her other class, I think the limit is 30. The only negative thing I have to say about her school so far is that they generally only allow you to take 4 classes per semester. You CAN take five twice without permission, but not as a freshman. Anything over twice, you need special permisssion. They *did* tell us this in a round about way, ie you need x number of units to graduate, and each class is a unit, but we never stopped to figure out that this translated to four classes a semester. I just wish there was a little more leeway to take classes just for exploration, kwim? Especially since she is considering double majoring, which would leave her with very few opportunities for electives. I also find it strange that lab classes are weighted exactly the same as classes without a lab.

I'm so happy for her, though, but sad too, as every day brings us closer to her leaving.

They didn't do a survey on my daughter's roommate assignment either. We actually asked about it at orientation and they said "everybody lies, there's no point". There was no questions at all. Basically name, address, phone, payment info, building request. So even if you wanted to report that you smoked or didn't smoke or were allergic to smoke, there was nowhere to put such a thing.

My dd found out her 2 roomates a few weeks ago and has been chatting with them on facebook. We're thinking of a road trip to meet them, they are about 4 hours away from us.

She registered for classes at orientation last week and is just taking 4 classes this first semester(12 credit hours)....all gen ed requirements. English Composition, Psychology, Human Systems, & College Algebra. The science and math classes both have labs too. I think this will be enough for her to manage for the first semester as this will be such a change for her.

She's also already signed up for sorority recruitment(which cost me $50) and is really excited to possibly join a sorority.

She also has a summer book to read for her english class. Does anybody else's child have a summer reading assignment? We found out about it at orientation and it was a big surprise as I didn't know colleges even did this. But it's a short book, could probably be read in a few hours, and a study guide with discussion questions.

So how many credits/courses are your kids taking first semester?
Are they talking fraternity/sorority?
Any summer reading homework?
How about roommates? Anybody meet theirs?

My DS has or I should say had a summer read, but it had to be done before orientation- which he went to on June 14. The school sent out a book in May for all incoming Freshmen to read, and they did a sample class during orientation week and discussed the book. Now he's done for the summer, for the first time in about 7 years.
He signed up for classes during orientation- he only has 3 classes, but it's 15 credits. He has an honors core class called Culture and Expression in two sections for 6 credits, then he has Bio with a lab and physics with a lab. 3 classes that take up a huge chunk of his week:scared1: C&E has no textbook, just classic novels, about 10 of them, so his books should be affordable this semester. I'll probably just order through the school bookstore (which is a Barnes & Noble) because it's the only place I can find the physics lab manual, and the pricing is comparable to all of the other sites I checked- and cheaper in some cases.
Durieng orientation, he also signed up for a few clubs and the campus radio station, so I'm happy to see he plans to keep busy outside of class.
About a week ago, he got his roommate assignment in the mail. They have texted a few times since then, but the boy was still busy with graduation and finals (I guess snow days got them pushed late into June) so they agreed to try to hook up in July. DS friended the boy on FaceBook, the poor kid never would have found my DS there are about 700 people with DSs name on there, his roommate has a unique name so he was easy to find. They'll talk who brings what after the roommate goes for his orientation and gets settled.

And, against popular opinion, at DSs urging, we ordered from Residence Hall Linens. We upgraded the quality on everything, so paid a little more than advertised prices, but it all came already, and I checked it all out, and it is of pretty good quality, and they claim it's guaranteed through graduation. I compared what I ordered to my local Bed Bath and Beyond, and I got a good deal. I guess it's because we are on the New York City pricing structure in our retail stores (think Disney pricing) everything costs more in a store around here than in other places. Most important, I liked that they have a twin XL bed bug mattress guard, and my local BB&B doesn't. Hofstra had bed bugs last winter in one of the dorms, so we're not taking any chances.:scared1:

My goodness, I am wordy this morning, I hope I didn't put you all to sleep. I've been off the boards so long after a death in my family, I feel like I came back with so much to say:blush:

Wow, I'm surprised they did that. If your DD is sensitive to smoke, she's going to have a problem with this (3rd hand smoke is dangerous). i think I would encourage her to call the housing office and discuss it with them. Hopefully they can change some things around and find her a more suitable roommate.

I think she may call to ask.

Hers didn't have a lot of questions, but I know that smoker/non-smoker was one of them. Maybe the girl lied. She did say that she wants to cut down or quit before college starts.

Congrats on knowing class.. DS wont sign up until he goes to registration on 7/8..

I too think DD needs to call housing office and switch roomies.. smoking or 3rd hand smoke is a deal breaker..

We had some drama here this am, DS got an email from his dorm saying that move in was 8/15 - 8/17.. he wont get back from the Alaskian cruise til late on 8/16.. so .. he wanted a get a direct flight home.. but ..
asked him if he wanted us to cancel him from the cruise? NO he wants to go on the cruise.. said his issue is friends. and what can we do??? Tickets and cruise at paid for.. and we cant move the cruise to 1 week before as DS#1 has finals 8/5.. so:confused3

He's taking 15 credits the first semester. I wanted to call and get the AP scores because he could drop the English for something else with just a 3, but he couldn't find the info I'd need to get the score on the phone. I think he just dumped everything in his backpack into the trash after exams or something. He came home from orientation with a really crappy schedule (basically just put down whatever the counselor told him to), so I got on line with him and we moved some of the classes to bunch them up a bit more since his dorm is in Siberia. He had classes sprawled from 8am to 4:45pm. It was really easy to do and we were even able to check out rate-my-professor before changing sections.

He does have summer reading, which surprised me. I was thinking this would be the first summer since middle school he wouldn't have a summer assignment, but no such luck.

He has said he's probably not interested in a fraternity, but we'll see. I can't believe how early they start rushing as freshmen. When I was in school, people really didn't consider rush until halfway through sophomore year. By that point, you really have a feel for the personalities of the various fraternities and sororities. I don't know how you figure out what frat you fit in with when you haven't even gone to school there yet. His roommate seems to me to be the type who would want to rush, so that may influence whether he does or not.

We amost had the same problem. We're doing a cruise out of New York that returns 30 July. I had been debating between that one and the one that returns 13 August. The later one was cheaper, but I was thinking that would only give me a week until move-in (thinking most move in the weekend of the 20th) so went for the earlier one. So glad I did since he moves in the 13th.

We were hoping to get an early move-in on the 12th they offer to out-of-staters, but they have that for every dorm except his, which they're using for summer housing. That would have been nice since I was reading on college confidential it's 100% better to move in the day before.

So has anybody started dorm room shopping yet?
We're really, really trying not to go overboard but not to forget the necessities.

Here's what we've got so far:
Memory foam mattress topper
Mattress pad
2 pillows
2 pillow protectors
Desk Lamp
40 Hangers (thin, no slip)
Over door mirror
Over door towel rack(for the bathroom)
Cork/dry erase board for above the desk
Alarm Clock
Surge surpressor

Things I know we still need:
Sheets
Towels
Wastebasket
Umbrella
dry erase board for door
toiletries/meds

So, help me out.
What have you bought?
What do we still need that we've forgotten?

I bought sheets and a comforter etc. today from a 5hr promo at jcpenney.com. My son is at work today, but thankfully had already told me he didn't care and I could pick up stuff on sale. He said either plain blue or black with neutral sheets. I also bought towels and hangers the other day at Costco. That's as far as I've (we've?) gotten. My son HATES shopping even more than I do, so I'm trying to pick up some of the stuff for him.

He'll go for orientation next week and I'm hoping he'll get a good idea and some motivation then.

throw blanket
alarm clock/ipod dock
shower caddy soap dish and toothbrush holder (the travel kind) and flip flops
bath towels, face towels and wash cloths

laundry detergent and dryer sheets (big sale in the supermarket + triple coupons)
surge protector
laptop

We need:
hangers
dry erase board
wastebasket
desk lamp
toiletries/meds like tylenol, cough meds and allergy meds
bandaids etc for first aid
back up supply of contact lenses and all the paraphenalia
underbed storage (dressers are small there)
bed risers
fan (who knows if the room will be too hot when the semester begins)

Things specific to my son's needs:
cleats
a new soccer ball
dress shoes
a few extra pairs of sneakers

And things to coordinate with the roommate
micro/fridge
tv
dvd player
video game system
area rug
floor lamp

Don't forget to buy a broom and some cleaning wipes :thumbsup2

We've got pretty much everything DD18 needs. She's got her eye on a small fridge with a separate freezer, though. She'll get her roommate assignment later this week, so she can fnd out if the roomie already has a fridge. If not, DD plans to go get this fridge. We have an old but functional microwave--if they want to have it, that will save them $50.

Thanks for the posts!

You've reminded me that she also already has:
Small tool kit
Cleaning Wipes
boom box with ipod dock
Laundry hamper
Laundry basket

And my "still need" list has increased to:
Sheets
Towels
Wastebasket
Umbrella
dry erase board for door
toiletries/meds(otc + first aid)
Laptop(this is a graduation gift from us, just haven't bought it yet)
Area Rug

We don't have roommates yet. Hopefully soon. I did buy some stacking cubes at Target last week on sale. I figure I can return them if they won't work. But they look like they will work to store supplies by his desk. I also got some towels (3 sets) and a comforter. Still need sheets and all the other bedding stuff like mattress pad etc. We need to get our own fridge and microwave. We won't buy those until DS talks with the other guys in the suite. I hope we will get some kind of list!

Summer reading is not something he or I even thought to ask about! Better check on that asap! He has 17 hours and 8:00 classes everyday and one night class on Mondays! Not the best schedule but he'll manage! At least he will get some pre-requisite requirements out of the way.

DH and I went shopping on Monday and got

Mattress pad
Sheets
Comforter
Carpet
Trash Can
towels - 4
washcloths - 12
hand towels - 6

He has received as gifts:
Flat Screen TV
Printer
Laptop
ihome for his iphone
dorm fridge

He will take his P3 I am sure…

Sounds like I need to order more contacts, I did not think of that!

I think we have plenty of pillows and hangers from home, he will need something for laundry organization and washing.

We have not heard from his roommate yet, so we have not bought a microwave. I would like to get him a memory foam topper and I will probably wait until the week we leave to stock up on the "consumables" like shampoo, tissues and what not...

I would love to get some “organizational” things for the room, but we have not seen the layout and the pics on the website are awful! I am sure we will wait until we take him to school to buy some of that. We have a 2 day welcome/orientation to attend as well…lol…

Neither DH nor I have ever stayed in a dorm, so this is a bit out of our element. Did you students have to have a physical and provide a shot record?

Are they or have they received the Gardasil shot? My DD 13 has, she does not know what it is for, but I did not know they recommended it for boys as well until this summer. His campus clinic will vaccinate him for free and I have talked to him about taking advantage of that.

We actually had to have a physical form turned in with the housing contract. He does need to go back into the doc to get hepatitis I think. :confused3 Is that the one they do in 2 shots over a few weeks? No one said anything about gadasil.

DD18 did not have to have a physical, but she had to provide her immunization record. She has had the Gardisil shot and the Meningitis shot.

If anyone is waiting on AP test scores, I have a suggestion, although I'm not sure if other schools will do this as quickly as my daughter's did.

Anyhow, we did not want to pay the $$ to call and find out the scores early, but teachers had access to the scores yesterday. My daughter's calc teacher had told the kids she would call them with the results, but she did not do that until today. But, my daughter was checking on on the Facebook thread for her school, and someone mentioned that if you had sent the scores to the school, they already had them posted as transfer credits if you received a 4 or 5. Now, obviously, this method may not work for everyone, but it's worth a shot if you're waiting. Maybe you could call the college/university to ask for scores.

My daughter was very happy with two of her scores---she got 5s in calc and bio. She got a 4 in English lit, and she was a little disappointed in that, because she was thinking she got a 5. However, she did not think she did as well as she did in the other two, so I guess it balances out. Unfortunately, because of her major, she will still have to take a year of bio in college. The AP class will count as an elective, but it won't go toward her major. Good luck to everyone.

DD did not need a physical
Nobody has mentioned Gardasil(although DD did have the series)
We did need to have the doctor send over her immunization record and we did that quite a while ago. I don't recall whether it was just for admittance to the university or whether it was for housing. But either way, we sent it in and she's all set.
