I know that the regular booster seats are not allowed on the planes, but what about the high back booster seats?

You can only use a high back booster if you are planning to use the 5 point harness with it. If you do not use the 5 point harness (generally for children over 40 pounds) you will need to check it.

It depends on the airline. SWA and Delta do not allow any boosters at all.

Boosters aren't allowed on planes no matter what. If you think about it, all boosters are designed to be used only with combo lap/shoulder belts (thus, you can never use a booster in a car that has only lap belts, either), and all airplanes have is a lap belt. If you are using a convertible carseat/booster, and have it in carseat mode with the straps still in use, you can use it that way. If you have one of the bigger convertible models (like some of the Britax ones) that allow use of the 5 point harness up to 60 or 80 lbs, you'd want to check with the airline about the width of the seat, and compare that to your model to make sure it will fit.

If it is mfr'd after 1985, *AND* has an FAA sticker approving it for aircraft use w/ a 5-pt harness in place, then *in that configuration*, it is not technically considered a "booster" under the FAA definition, and can be used on any US carrier, including the aforementioned SWA and Delta.

No seat that lacks integral upper-torso restraint may be used on board a US-based commercial aircraft.
