I'm fairly new at photography, and I'm completely new to this part of the Dis boards :wave2:
I've been using a Canon S2 IS for the last couple of years and I'm ready to upgrade.
I've been eyeing up the Rebel XTI but the D30 (?) has also been recommended....any thoughts or suggestions?

Nope. I'm in the same exact boat as you. S2 owner, XTi or 30D future owner. I have a thread with some questions answered from the folks here on this board. That thread is here:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1474596&referrerid=&highlight=to+XT+or+to+XTi

At first, I thought I would get an XT or an XTi, but was converted to thinking XTi or 30D. See if it answers any of your questions though. I have also bumped up the thread for you to find it easier.

Welcome to the Photography Board! The folks here are great at answering your questions. They haven't gotten sick of me yet, so I don't think they will get sick of anyone on here. :) Just don't post photos with huge watermarks. That can get things ugly around here! :lmao:

The first thing I would ask is have you held both cameras, the XTi will be quite a bit smaller in your hands, and that could be either good or bad depending on what you think.

With the XTi 30D Here are the differences to me

XTi 10 MP 30D 8MP
30D spot metering
XTi Dust Control (mixed revues on if it works or not)
XTi smaller 30D bigger
30D better build (more solid parts)
30D better controls

I think there is a frames per sec difference as well.

I have the XT, and am thinking hard about moving to the 30D at this time, both are good cameras

Make sure that you don't confuse the D30 with the 30D. The D30 was Canon's first consumer DSLR. It was made about 7 years ago. It was a great camera for the time, but it's rather dated. The 30D is their current mid-level DSLR.

:welcome: Welcome to the Photography Boards!!! 'Tis true, the good folks here offer valuable advice and experience, and post dazzling, inspiring photos!

Gregg, does the 30D have a larger sensor than the XTi, and what practical impact does that have on an amateur?

I've been thrilled with my XT, still don't know how to optimize use of all it can do, but still find myself wondering about the 30D too! :rolleyes1

Good luck! :disrocks:

i think the sensors are the same but the 30d blows the rebel xt away( don't know if the xti is 3fps also) i was shocked by the difference a couple fps make. plus i think the buffer on the 30d is bigger( thinking maybe 7 raw, didn't look that up but the xt is 4)...it's all about speed baby!:lmao: ( well not all or i'd be looking at the mark111;) ) really i was thinking of this when i was trying to take shots of a hummingbird a couple days ago

it (30d) also has the better mirror system (pentamirror vs pentaprism,) the rebel has the cheaper one naturally

welcome ericamcl, looking forward to your photo posts!

If the XTi feels small in your hands, just consider picking up a battery grip for it, it makes a huge difference.

The sensor sizes are the same, but the XTi has more MP on that same size sensor. In terms of picture quality, the XTi and 30D are supposed to be very similar.

From the XT to the 30D the benifits to me at least are 30D build quality is better, and I actually like the bigger camera as well. The 30D has 3200 ISO where the XT has 1600. The 30D has spot metering. And t he 30D has 5 fps speed and a larger buffer, about double the size.
