Hi from PA! From the Welcome Board

Hi everyone

since it seems like this thread has become a "chat"type thread and the size of it is larger than we normally leave on the Welcome board I am gonna move it over to the Community board.

Please keep stopping by the welcome board and helping newbies.

Enjoy your new home:thumbsup2

Have we lost our PA thread, just because we moved?:confused3

Hey guys. So I'm officially moving to PA for school, and my parents are considering moving there also. One thing is though, my older sister has severe autism. She doesn't talk, but she can use the bathroom, etc. and knows a little sign language.

Thing is, she was getting to hard to handle when I was 11, and was put into a group home. Now she isn't "locked away" she comes home on Sundays, holidays, and for hurricanes. If my parents move up there, we definitely want her to come with us!

So my question is this: Does anyone know of any group homes in an area of PA that isn't that expensive to live in? I found McGuire Ministries, but we are looking for options....

Thanks again guys. :)

Welcome to the board disneychickforever! I can't help, but I wanted to say hi. :)

I was searching for this thread this morning on the welcome board! Glad I found my fellow PA-ers.

Have any of the Pittsburgh DISers been down to the Strip for Pens merchandise yet? I'm thinking about heading down this weekend.

Are you referring to the home in New Brighton Pa,

I was referring to any home in general, how is the New Brighton one?

My son is involved in early intervention so in the beginning of his process he was tested at new horizons ( a school, which I believe, has pupils who live at mcquire).
When my son was two his teacher's daughter was a resident of mcquire and she spoke frequently and highly of the facilty and employees. She was relieved that her daughter had a safe happy place were she was nurtured and cared for. The daughter was reluctant to leave mcquire for home visits. I asked if this bothered her, and she said no, its a blessing, if anythingh would happen to me I know my daughter is in good hands.
The campus of mcquire is beautiful and serene. I have never been there as a family member of a resident. Only as a deliver of flowers. However, I received a positive happy vibe, the employees were good natured and kind (kinda of like cms).

Thanks for the tip :) I looked into McGuire earlier, and they have a waiting list apparently, but also, I think they cost extra money....more then what the state provides? We are looking for something run by the state, do they have them in PA, I know they do here in FL and they are really nice.

What part of PA are you planning on re-locating to?

I'm going to Edinboro (Erie area) for school, my parents are still debating moving. Not 100% sure if they are going to, but they asked me to look it up anyway.
