I was so proud of myself for getting great deals on airfare, Universal and WDW resorts by going 9/25 - 9/30. The last three nights are at Universal and I see where both parks close at 6:00 p.m. That seems awful early. Is it because they are getting the parks ready for HHN? If so, I feel like I messed up. WDW doesn't close their parks that early. I know how great FOTL acess is, but man, that bites a big one, lol.

You don't even need FOTL in September. The parks are empty until the late afternoon.
HHN starts October 1st and 2nd. If you wanted to visit HHN, then yes, you did mess up. If not, then everything is fine, the place will be empty and you'll get on all the rides with no problem.
As for leaving the parks at 6pm, yes it's early, but you head out of the park, have a few drinks at CW, go eat somewhere, go swim at your pool, then go to bed. Or you head out to a restaurant or dinner show.
The differance between going during the busy season (now) and later (september) is that there will be less people in the walkways to bump into, less people waiting in line for snacks, a quiet athmosphere, less people at the pool. You'll have a great time.

Indeed, parks close at 6p because it's the slow season. But don't worry! As robiva stated, there are still a lot of things you can do until bedtime (whenever that may be). :)
