Hello all!...This will be our first trip to HH (ever). We just closed on our AKL DVC in November and took a quick weekend trip to SSR in Dec. That said we love our beach vacations too. My DH spent all his childhood summers in north Ocean City Maryland; and as a family, we have been back every summer (and winter and fall...).

This will be a whole new experience for us and I really want my DH to love it. I see there are lots of outdoor activities (kayaking, dolphin cruise, etc.) to sign up for. We will do them all! Does anyone know if the waves are good for surfing? Should he bring a board?

Finally, I'm not sure about the anniversary dinner itself. DIS members and Trip Advisor give high marks to Old Fort Pub. I don't know...it seems a little stuffy to me.

Any and all advice appreciated!!!

We live in Md and enjoy going to OC all seasons. It's a little different here, no waves to talk about, although the kids do enjoy a bit of boogie boarding if there's a bit of wind, but most of the time when you can swim the sea is pretty calm. It's perfect for Kayaking here in the marshy area around Broad Creek. There is open water like the bay on Assateague, but lots of protected area and wildlife to view and you can literally walk from your villa and get in your kayak and go! Or take the kayak activity tour that is sponsored by the resort.

I have never been to Old Fort Pub. I do like Sunset Grille. Michael Anthony's is kind of lowlighted and romantic feeling - good Italian food.

You might want to try Alexander's, which is on the way to the Disney Beach House in Palmetto Dunes. Coincidentally, DH and I celebrated our 24th anniversary there last year!

Another nice place is the Ocean Grille, which is across the marina from the Disney resort. (Even though you can see it from the resort, you probably won't want to walk there because it's a pretty looooong way around. Not bad if you're just out for a walk, but not great for trying to look nice for your dinner!) The view of the marsh is phenomenal!!

We are staying at a condo in Shelter Cove this weekend (to see what it's like to be in HH, but not at the Disney resort) and have made a reservation for Easter brunch at Ocean Grille.

What day do you arrive? We are leaving on Wednesday or maybe Thursday. Nobody I know here right now, but it's still great! Have a nice Easter.

We're not arriving till Thursday. Not sure what time; it depends on what time we are able to get out of here. (i.e., what time Joe can break away from work ;) ) I doubt we'll get there before dinner time. We'd love to see you! Why don't you just extend for a few days? :rotfl2:

Sorry, but it looks like we'll miss you this trip. Maybe July 4th or Thanksgiving this year? Will you be there then?

I'm sooooo looking forward to getting to Hilton Head for at least a few days of R&R. I just love that place!!

I love it here also! I spent a good part of the afternoon on our porch watching a dolphin swim around and swat the water about with his tail. It was low tide so I was surprised to see him. Later when he left some kayaks came up and I think he followed them back in. When they caught sight of him they hung around for a while, watching him also. I had a great view and could see him underwater as well as when he surfaced.

Extending actually sounds good and they did have a two bedroom available for a couple of days - I'd already called and checked! Just didn't feel like switching rooms, so I declined. I may call again because things change all the time. The waitlist got me here to begin with, lol!

We are already booked for Thanksgiving, but not July. I think I'll go north in summer.

Sorry we missed you! Take care and enjoy.

This past summer we ate at a place called The Sage Room -- located in the Heritage Plaza area. http://www.sageroomhh.com/ It was very, very good and a real nice place -- but definitely not stuffy! Quite a few of the locals recommended the place. Its very small so it might be hard to get a reservation, and it's not outrageously expensive. Ask to sit at the counter so you can watch the chefs cook.

Congratulations! The Old Fort Pub is our favorite restaurant and that of our 25-year old daughter and her husband. If you go, try to time your reservation to sunset. The Sage Room mentioned also has a good reputation. Another good place is Red Fish - wonderful wine selection. Also Charley's Crab on Squire Pope Road is consistently good. Have a great trip.

Try looking on eGullet for more HH dining reviews- I was just looking there yesterday, and they talk about all the restaurants mentioned for you here, plus a few more. We're right behind you...DH and I also bought AKV in November and I'm headed to SSR with a girlfriend in June, followed by HHI in August with family and DCL Western in November. I LOVE DVC!!!!!!!

DH and I went to HH and spent a lot of time in Savannah. It was fantastic. We ate a wonderful upscale meal at The Chart House. It is on River Street in Savannah. I would personally enjoy touring the historic squares in Savannah, taking a riverboat cruise, and ending the day with a great meal.

On HH, we only went to Scott's across from the resort and Outback on 278. There are a lot of national chains on 278.

Wow! I am pleasantly surprised (as a relative newbie to the boards and DVC) and grateful for all the responses. Thanks to everyone :thumbsup2 for their advice and suggestions. I will definitely check out the menu at Alexander's, Ocean Grille and the Sage Room. (And thanks for the tip on eGullet.com.) I'm not ruling out Old Fort Pub but I want to know what the alternatives are.

We are going to stop in Savannah the Saturday night before we head to HH. We have spent one night before (2005?) on a road trip to visit my inlaws in Winterhaven, FL. Loved River St. but for this trip want to experience more of the history (B.A. in history) and culture of Savannah.

That said my DH wants to eat, swim, and relax...

We've been to HH 2 summers, and last year went to Red Fish restaurant. It was phenomenal, the best food at any place in both years of going. You can see their menu at www.redfishofhiltonhead.com. I can't wait to go back this year.:thumbsup2

You might want to ask Doc. I remember him telling about a great private dining experience at HH, but I don't remember the details -- only that it sounded fabulous!!

"A Private Affair", a gourmet dining experience offered by Chef Gordon at the HH resort unfortunately is no longer offered. It would have been the perfect Anniversary dinner. It was originally offered in the GV model. Gordon had the guests select their meal - or he had some "low-country" suggestions. He would even invite the guests to join hoim when he shopped for the ingredients. The meal was prepared in the GV while guests enjoyed the ambiance of the villa or joined him in the preparation if desired.

When the reosrt sold out, it was moved to the Beach House, where Gordon magically converted "Signals" , the snack bar, into an elegant venue with tablecloths and candles - again preparing the meal next to the table - truly a Chef's table opportunity.

Sadly, a few years ago - for a number of reasons - the program was discontiuned. It was offered only a couple of nights each week and was limited to one group each night. We were able to participate in the program several times over the years - sometimes with family, sometimes with friends and once it was truly a "Private Affair" with jsut 2 of us. It was reasonably priced - and included a wine flight with each course.

There are a number of great spots to dine at HH. We enjoy Redfish, Alexanders, CQs, Old Fort Pub, Ocean Grille - among others.

Have a great anniversary! :)
