My mother and father in law have just come back to the UK after vacationing in Florida and South Carolina at SSR, HHI and VWL. It was the HHI portion that ended up ruining their vacation.

Cutting a long story short, they both came back with terrible bites to their arms and legs which appeared after spending a couple of nights (of a 6 night) stay at HHI. They ended up in hospital for injections it got that bad.

The room was for disabled guests (they are not - but that's not the issue), it was right next door to the reception area (sorry don't know the room number as yet). The room was not clean, when filling the bath suds appeared and scum on the top of the water. There were cracked tiles on the floor and generally the room was very very poor.

After mentioning the problems to the reception lady they were told that there were no other rooms available and they either had to stay there or move on (which was their preferred option). The move would have cost them though. At this point I got involved and managed to get them moved after speaking to Member Services, they moved back down to SSR and had a much better time although their vacation was very much restricted due to painful legs and self consciousness of the ugly bites.

They spoke to our DVC guide in Orlando who was horrified and offered them c$60 of disney credits and a refund of the points for their 3 nights stay at HHI. This obviously goes some way to helping to address the situation but I am going to discuss this further with MS.

I am just interested in your views in terms of similar experiences.

I must say that this goes against my own experience at HHI as my family spent a lovely time there a couple of years ago albeit nearer to the pool area.

Many thanks in advance! David.

Sorry about the bad experience. Since the bites were only on arms and legs I would think it might just be mosquitos or some of the biting flies that are common on HH Island. Don't know what the bug exposure is in the UK but we've got a wide variety of blood suckers here in the USA. ;) Most everyone keeps insect repellent handy once the weather warms up. I would think the bed bugs might nibble other parts of the body, too.

We've had only good experiences at HH.

I agree. I am SO sorry they had such a bad experience - there is no excuse for a room in poor condition. However, I agree that the bites were probably not from bedbugs. There would be more bites on the trunk of the body than the limbs. There are lots of small biting insects in the South. This year is particularly bad as many parts had a very mild winter - didn't kill off as many of the little brutes as usual. We've only been to HHI once (about this time 2 years ago), but the place was wonderful.

The whole east coast is swarmed with mosquitos in the summer and especially southern areas like SouthCarolina, and HHI on the water, it has got to be really bad there right now ). I agree if it was just arms and legs it was mosquitos. I don't know if these are a problem in the UK , but it is just part of life here. Mosquitos leave large itchy welts that hurt and most of the time you never feel the bite, you just notice the welt. Bed bugs would leave a much smaller (small pimple) red dot and been all over the body. Guest services should have given them a bottle of repellent and I thnk they would have had a nice stay.

Sorry to hear about your mother and father-in-law's experience. Things like that can certainly put a damper on any vacation.

And the room seems to have been substandard as well. I must say, in the years I've been reading these boards I don't think I remember a bad room experience (or trip report for that matter) about HH. I'm sure in any resort a problem can crop up like this, but I think your own experience with your room was probably more indicative of the general resort experience. I'm just sorry that they ended up with one of the "bad experiences". :(

I am happy to hear that at least there was some attempt at compensation for the problems. Hopefully, they haven't been soured on future DVC trips.
