Has anyone ever driven home from WDW and stopped for a few days at HH on the way? We live in NY and thought it might be a nice way to end our August vacation. How long is the drive? Is it a pleasant one? How hard is it to get ressies at HH in August(at 7 mos. out)? I appreciate any answers you can supply. Thanks!!

We are doing it the opposite way next week. We'll be at Hilton Head for 4 days and then OKW. I am looking forward to having a few restful and relaxing days at HH and then hitting the parks for a full commando tour. I can't help it, its hard to relax and take it easy when I'm at Disneyworld!

I'm not sure how easy (or difficult) it will be to get HH in August at the 7 month window since HH is my home resort but I didn't think I would get a reservation on-site for a major holiday and did. You never know until you try. According to my driving directions (AAA and Expedia) its about a 4-1/2 hour drive from Hilton Head to OKW.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Thanks! Hope you have a great vacation! We've done commando many times and I agree it's HARD not to. We have recently begun to do some days commando and some relaxation. It works out very well!!! I feel kind of guilty not doing other kinds of vacations but every time we think about not returning for a few years we almost immediately begin to plan our next Disney vacation!!! It's crazy....... Please post when you return. I'd love to hear how things turned out. You must have serious butterflies in your stomach by now!!! I still get them before every visit!!!

You are right about the butterflies. I can hardly work these days. I am so excited to be returning to both Hilton Head and Disney! I was talking with a co-worker this morning and it turns out she and her husband will be staying in Palmetto Dunes at the same time we'll be on the Island so hopefully we'll see each other on the beach or something. What a small world it is!

Like you, I know there are other places to travel in the world but for now, give me Disney anytime! To show you how crazed I am, while planning this trip coming up in 11 days, I've got next year's trip to Hilton Head in the works - waiting for the 11 month window because I think I want to book a GV for our anniversary plus DH said I can take my niece for a "girl's weekend" in May and my whole family (about 20 of us) are planning a big trip in August 2004. I think planning (and going on) these trips will keep me busy for a while ;) .

I will report back when I return home. I plan to take notes on my new Palm Pilot.

This past summer we did the opposite of what you are planning. We stayed in HH from 7-1 through 7-4 then traveled down to OKW. It really worked out well for us.

The trip from Bergen County took me exactly 12 hours to HH. Figure another 45 minutes (max) from Yonkers.

For what it is worth, it seems to make more sense to stop in HH on the way down then it is to do on the way back. I guess once you have driven twelve hours straight it seems that the 5.5 hours or so it is from Orlando to HH is a short trip. To stop there, then know that you have another twelve hours more to go just seems wrong. Anyway, good luck with your planning!

Thanks for your input. We are still planning so I'm happy to have other opinions. Truthfully I can hardly bear to give up ANY days at WDW to stay at the beach but I thought it would be nice to try something new!! We are considering stopping on the way back but are afraid we will be bored after being in the World!! How is it at HH? Any room request advice?
