Not sure how well known this is, but Allegiant Air has some great prices to Orlando, NONSTOP, leaving from Fargo, ND. For about $300 RETURN after all fees and taxes, bags, etc. It's a pretty good deal. You have to pay for every little thing (seat selection, checked bags) but it's still cheaper than leaving out of Winnipeg. We just got back from Vegas, and the parking was $37 for the week. Orlando flights are a new offer, starting November 21st.

With our little Toyoto Echo, we get about 58 mpg - even with the cost of stops along the way, our gas costs and hotel costs will be minimal compared with the cost of flights and a rental car.....

Just a head's up I think these flights fly into Sanford and not Orlando airport so they wouldn't have Magical Express.

I'm dying to know, b/c I've been contemplating...how long does the drive take? Where do you stop for nights? (if you don't drive all night)

Sorry this has taken me so long to answer but I just re-read the thread. We drove down last year and left after work on a Friday night - we stopped overnight somewhere around Fergus Falls, MN (only because it was freezing rain and we couldn't drive any further that night - otherwise we would have driven right through to the Minneapolis area). We then stopped the next night at Clarksville, TN.

If I did it again from Manitoba, I would drive straight south on I-29 through Kansas City - in theory (well, my theory anyway) that would get you driving easterly across an area that wouldn't normally have heavy snow or icey roads (rather than driving easterly across the lake-side states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, etc.).

On the way home, we drove the Kansas City Route but only stopped at Nashville for the night didn't stop the rest of the way at all as we needed to be home to speak at a service - we just took turns driving and rested when we needed to.

We drove down back in June!! And I forgot about the thread, too. (I'm so old)

We left around 7 or 8 pm, stopped at Grand Forks for fruit and snacks for the cooler, and drove all night. We got to Kansas city by morning. We were so excited it wasn't a hard drive at all. Plus it was so interesting! Nothing like driving through the prairies! ug.

We made very good time, stayed overnight just outside of Atlanta (to not have to deal with rush hour traffic in the a.m.) And got to Sanford airport by 4:30ish to pick up my DD and my parents (lucky them got to fly).

We'd likely fly for shorter trips, just saw a return flight to Sanford for $110 US each person on Allegiant Air. Can't beat that, but you really have to check daily for those rates and grab them. Plus the car rentals are cheaper there than MCO, we rent offsite, it's a $10 cab ride for about $80 savings for the week.

Thanks for the info - I'm quickly becoming a Disney addict and reading about other's experiences are great.

Am going in November with hubby for a cruise out of Miami and we are flying from Minneapolis three weeks from today (yippee!) and going to MVMCP on November 13th.

But then I am driving from hamilton with my step-daughter (we are going there for Christmas) on January 1st and will put her back on a plane from Orlando on January 9th, then I have to drive back to manitoba alone! Should be a good 3 days by myself listening to Disney tunes!!! LOL It'll be worth it to be at Disney again.

I've been debating about doing Fargo to Florida through Allegiant this winter but need to figure out this Sanford Airport thing. Has anyone used that airport yet? How far away from Disneyworld are you and what transportation options to you have?

Last year I drove to Minneapolis with my 5 year old and 2 year old so Fargo would seem really easy at half the distance.

About an hour. You can check out Quick Silver or Mears for airport shuttle service, or take a taxi.

The best quote I got for transportation from Emerald Island Resort to Sanford Airport was about $130!! ONE WAY!

A car rental was cheaper! I rent from Budget off site ($10 from airport, but check operation hours!) and it's about $200 for the week, find a rental car discount code online, and you can return to the airport on the way back no charge.

It's only an extra 1/2 hour drive (it's north east of MCO) each way.
