DH has been looking forward to the Dopey challenge ("all or nothing" he insists) in 2013. But he just found out he needs hernia surgery for two hernias, one-groin the other-umbilical, and it'll be around June 1. Given normal recovery, what do you experienced runners think of the possibility of him having enough time for training? He runs about 5 miles normally, in 2011he trained for and ran the F&W falf marathon. He used to do marathons, so he understands the training necessary, but that was 30 years ago. Now he's 61 yo. I think he's crazy to consider it after surgery, I'd rather he "just" did the half, but he still insists "Dopey or nothing". What do y'all think? Is this a pipe dream? Or am I the one over-reacting? After all, he knows what he's getting into.

How long is the recovery period? It takes about 4 months or so to build up to a marathon. If he's able to start running again in August, he should have time to train for 2013.

Thanks! I was afraid that was it. Can you tell I'm probably overly worried? The doctor was pretty low key, telling him he could pretty much do whatever/whenever he felt up to it. So I suspect he'll be running by the Fourth of July, if not running 2-3 miles before.

I think since he's done the distances before that he knows what they are about and how to train. He should know that it is ok to go slower. Remember there is a maximum time and there is nothing wrong with using ALL the allotted time and enjoying the events. I do just that and it has served me well.

I was able to run a 10k 2 weeks after hernia surgery. The recovery went pretty well. Especially if he's already in shape.
