Here now- MK security

Introducing Magical Metal Detector Mornings.
  • Arrive between 7:30-8:30 for a pre-opening celebration before the park opens to regular guests
  • Have your photo taken with Chip (or Dale...you'll never know the difference)
  • Get early entry through our latest attraction: Sully's Door To Boo's Bedroom (a/k/a a metal detector)
  • Get a complimentary cupcake
  • No limit to the number of people who can take advantage of this offer each day
  • All for the low, low price of $59
Problem solved. A significant number of people will show up early and get through security before the masses show up, thereby lessening the crowding between 8:30-10:00. And these people won't complain about the new security procedures because they are buying a special hard ticket experience.

I think its almost certain that Disney will find a way of offering a "fast track" security option to special guests at some point. Its quite a selling point for airlines for business/first class travel so Disney will no doubt want to cash in on that.

The stupid thing is that the more security they put in place, the more people begin to notice the areas that are not protected. So great, inside the parks are protected, but pre-security outside the parks, bus stops, monorail, and I assume Disney Springs are still completely unprotected and now more obvious than ever.

Got here yesterday, so far 3 for 3 being selected. Huge backlog this morning astound 8:45.

It's all we can do to arrive at the parking lot near the TTC at opening time, then it's usually close to an hour before we get to the entrance to MK. If everyone has to go through them (which I assume then it'd be 1 hr to get through all that and through the entrance) then I can't see us getting into the park until it's 2 hours after opening time. Other parks will be better for us (although it'd still be about 1 hr after opening with security time), but that'd be terrible for us w/ MK.

I noticed the guards are being much more thorough in bag searches. That's holding up the lines more.

Notice that a few weeks ago but a huge part of the problem is the guests themselves.

You KNOW you are going through bag check.

Get your bags off your body and out of your stroller.
Unzip your bags and open them.
Be prepared the second you hit that table to sit all your bags ON the table -
- flaps off
- zippers open
- obstructions removed (say the poncho you stuffed on top)

The more time you waste not being prepared or making it harder for security or making them ask you to do what you were supposed to do - slows everyone down.

On approach I not only notice the length of lines but the people in them. If they have lots of bags stuffed under a stroller, backpacks still on their backs or purses still cross body I avoid those lines.

NO EXCUSES, even if it's your first day you can see what is coming. It's nothing new and not rocket science.

I was there Saturday morning with my daughter, who is four and has a pacemaker. She can't go through the metal detectors (she gets patted down at the airports, which I am fine with and she's used to it). When I said she couldn't go through it, I was told, just leave her here and go through. I'll watch her. I could see her the entire time and she wasn't worried at all. But it was completely stupid. When we were at Universal, they would wand me and then let us go on our merry way.

We've been here since last Thursday. We are bagless. We've entered at all times of day. We have had to go through the metal detectors at every park every time we enter. In my observation they are making all guests without bags go through the detectors

We got home last night. My husband was randomly selected 100% of the time for the metal detectors. That's 10 entrances over the trip, scanned all 10 times.
What struck me was the beefed up security in general. We made it to Epcot a little late yesterday and the place was crawling with security. More uniformed presence than I had seen on previous trips, but some subtly placed plain clothes as well.

For those who have gone when it seemed to be everyone going through the detectors, how long did it take to get through security? I can't see it taking any less than an extra hour to enter the park

Seconds. The bag check lines have been horrendous at times (Friday at AK was unlike anything I've seen before, and this was at about noon) but the scanners for the no bag folks take no time at all

1. The world is NOT safe, never was never will be no matter what security, legislation or weapon you might put in place.
2. If (when) some nut job shoots up WDW , it will not matter if its in park, resort , bus , boat or parking lot. It will forever change how people will view WDW. Security will be a joke, just as the airlines. Once again people will have to confront that if a crazy person want to deal out for attention to a cause, they wll make it happen.
3. Security is not the answer to Mental health crisis currently affecting the world.

4 Live for the moment , you never know when it might end. Try not to let the extra security make you feel insecure.

Yes. A million times yes. This same scenario may come into play with the metal detectors, unfortunately. There's no real reason the detectors should add a significant amount of time to park entry on an average day (assuming they install an appropriate number and personnel are well- trained), but guests WILL screw it up.

We've all been behind that person. It's definitely not rocket science. Remember: Common sense is not so common. :rolleyes1 I'm willing to give a person credit for effort, even if they fall short. But the people with 5 bags who don't even try? Um, no.

Almost every time we went through bag check our last trip (one medium backpack, no purse or other bags in stroller), the person doing my bag check commented on the fact that I had my bag ready, unzipped, and any jackets, etc, out and not crammed on top. They most definitely appreciate the gesture! They seemed to also appreciate that my items were well-organized inside (some stuff in open pockets, some in clear ziplock) and not all thrown in one large compartment in a big mess. I guess that makes it easier for them to sort through what's there and see to the bottom, although I admit I wasn't thinking about bag check when I did that. That was my OCD having a field day.

I will admit, I was that person one day with our rain cover for the stroller. We've never used one before and had completely forgotten it was in the basket. Luckily, it only took a couple seconds to yank it out  Buuut, I was pretty embarrassed.

Agree with this except for "just like the airlines".

I wonder if the question was asking how long it takes from start to finish to enter the park, as opposed to how long it takes to go through the metal detector process. A couple of weeks ago (before they were screening everyone, or close to everyone), if you had a bag you could count on it taking 20+ minutes to enter the MK. On our AK day, it was a bit longer than that. From the time we walked toward the entrance from the tram stop until the time we were fully in the park was a bit over half an hour. At the IG at Epcot, it was 2 minutes. At the FW entrance of Epcot, it was about 15 minutes. At DHS (before RD), it was 5-10 minutes. At the MK, it was around 20 minutes.

well if everyone is going through scanners, then they breakup the scanners, one set by the busses, one set by the launches, and one set at the hotels before they get on the monorails and at the TTC. Keep the extra lines away from the gates of the park

we went bag free last month -- I was pulled once at Epcot to go through the metal detector ... it wasn't a big deal & still MUCH faster than the bag check line. I was momentarily panicked when I realized I might have to empty my pockets ... I had one potentially embarrassing item in my pocket I would've rather not gotten out in front of the men ;)

I was surprised I was the one pulled for the metal detector, as my hubs was wearing cargo shorts. we had been cautioned they sort of scrutinize those more carefully.

my kids are older, but we'll never carry bags again. it was very liberating without them.
