 We have noticed on our last few trips that DH suffers something rotten with jet lag probably because he's a shift worker.
After reading about "No JetLag" we went to a few websites to find out who had it available in the UK.
Everywhere outside of Europe the ingredients are herbal but in Europe they are known as "Jet Ease" and the ingredients are vitamin B1, Riboflavin, Niacin, vitamin C and vitamin E. We ordered some, it came yesterday and we read the instructions so...how many of you used this product before and how effective was it?
We have looked around on the Internet and can find the herbal ingredients for the rest of the world formula individually but it gets expensive, we're not sure if a Bachs remedy might help combat jet lag or which one to try perhaps something with the common daisy extract in ? Any advice:confused3

That appears to be just a multi-vitamin (B group, C and E) and I really can't see how that would combat jet-lag.

I've tried Melatonin, which is sold as a food supplement in the US and is readily available there, but not in the UK. I've found that the 1mg has little effect, but the 3mg definitely helps me to sleep. I'm not convinced that it's a particularly pleasant sleep, though. Here's the skinny from Wikipedia.

DH and I are both shift workers and have never had any problem with Jet Lag. Have you tried different routines on the way home and upon arriving hoem, such as when to sleep and when not to sleep?

Claire ;)

Where did you order your's from. The ones I ordered from the site I posted are called No-Jet Lag and are completely homeopathic with none of the ingredients you mention in Jet Ease.

We ordered ours from a company called The Garden Pharmacy in Covent Garden (London) they have exactly the same picture on them and they are made in New Zealand just like the 'other' ones are, just not the same!!
We have tried altering our sleep patterns (not always possible) drinking plenty of water/sports drinks, walking about and stretching regularly, setting our watches to Orlando time before we fly and wearing our sunglasses before we board the plane (might fool the old grey matter into thinking it's all a dream) and playing games etc to keep our minds active. We also take a strip of extra strength pain killers to help get rid of any headaches/migraines.
I did ask what would be suitable to help overcome jet lag at our Holland and Barretts and all they recommended was Guarana extract or Valerian extract combined with the extra B-vitamins which they seem to think will help a great deal anyway:confused3
I did see some of the new Bachs formulas in our local Boots and some of them seem okay for flower extracts, just not the herbal formula that is used in the "No Jet Lag" tablets. We did find a company last thing last night which can supply the daisy extract which seems to have some health benefits.:surfweb:

Sorry I thought you meant jet lag upon return to the UK as that is more common as it is an Eastbound direction. The body can usually cope better with a longer day than a shorter day. What are the worst sympoms?

Do you sleep on the plane? On the way to the US, I always get 3 to 4 hours sleep during the flight (so a sizeable nap). Then am ok until 9.30/10pm. Go to bed then and sleep through until 5.30/6am - which is fine: we just get up and get on with our days.

You might want to avoid sports drinks and sweets and things because they are artificial stimulants - they will bring you up, before you crash down again (on a sugar low). You are probably better to look at having a quiet, peaceful flight with naps (no stimulating games and avoid sugars, alcohol and caffeine)

I try to encourage DH to take a nap but he finds it very hard to do, his usual home routine is he wakes up between 3.30am and 4am to get ready to walk to work (we don't drive) to start work for 5am putting in a full shift 'til lunch time, he has brunch and goes to bed for a couple of hours then we have dinner at 3pm and I go to work for 4pm 'til 9pm we're both in bed by 10pm.
We have tried before to get a few days off work before we go just to get him used to sleeping for a few hours longer but it can take a couple of weeksfor him to adapt. He's been working the same hours for almost 21 years as a delivery postman.
His worst symptoms are disorientation tiredness and chronic headaches, we take asprin for a few days before we fly and some snacks and request water from the cabin crew to keep hydrated. We walk about and exercise regularly and don't drink alcohol before we fly or on the 'plane.

Ah when you said shift work I thought you meant he did various shifts over a 24 hour period. Being an early worker certainly would not help going Westwards, as the usual time he gets up would be 10.30pm in Florida! I am not sure really what to suggest other than trying something sedative to help him sleep longer.

Claire ;)

Thanks for being so understanding:hug: we are thinking about getting him some Kalms tablets;) and once we are up in the air he can swap seats with DS and put in earplugs and try to sleep resting against the window. Might have to get a few more snacks for him from the cabin crew if he's asleep when the meals are served.

To be honest on the Florida route the main meal is served within about an hour and a half of take off and the later snack is served about an hour and a half before landing so should get about 4 hours of no food being served. Who are you flying with?

Claire ;)

Hi Claire L we fly from Manchester with VA at 13.30pm 21st June, which is the time when DH is normally in bed!!

VA are good with food timings and you may get an ice cream a while after your main meal. I am hoping your DH may be able to get some sleep by about 4pm. What does your DH normally do on the days he is not working sleepwise?

Claire ;)

Well he normally gets up before me on sundays at 7am but is awake about 6am. On weekdays the alarm goes off at 7am to get us up to get our son ready for school. He has a rotational day off each week however some weeks he is asked to work that day if there's someone off sick or a few in his section on leave so some weeks we only have Sundays together.

Our employer is currently discussing with the union along with the 'non-existant' pay deal bringin in later start and finish times. That would eventualy have all the postmen on deliveries starting at 6am 'til 2pm so not great for much of a family life at home (most of us wives work afternoons/late shift) since the kids get out of school at 3.25pm. I'm dreading them bringing in those changes it will mean longer days for DH and possibly no afternoon naps.

These tablets (natrasleep)are very good and probably will work better for your dh than kalms

Thanks for the link Netty:hug: Hopefully they will help:thumbsup2 I'm going to buy some for DH he can take some for the 4 days before we go so he gets a really decent deep sleep each night, then he can gauge what he will need to take on the plane to get a nap during the flight. It's worth a go.. we can only try them and see what happens:thumbsup2
