It is actually a shrub which also goes by the name Spotted Alder. North American Indians used it as a poultice for swelling and tumors. You can find out about it here http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/w/withaz27.html I've never tried it for hemorroids. My obstetrician recommends not letting yourself become constipated in order to prevent them.
