Yes booking early is best with Trainline to get the good prices, it's 6 months in advance, this morning I can see up to 10th September.

Trainline is normally 3 months in advance for “long distance” routes, but I’m still waiting on a May Manchester to London timetable to appear as it’s not been released by the train line yet. Timetables are normally set in stone around 12 weeks before travel

In 2019, we flew into Heathrow and stayed at the Premier Inn (looks like it's a different hotel now!) directly in Heathrow. I debated it, but we got into the airport later in the evening the night before the cruise and it was honestly SO nice to be right there. We booked DCL transport on embarkation day to get us to the cruise port in Dover.

For the return trip, we took a taxi to the train station at Dover (they're lined up waiting at the port). From there took the train to King's Cross and stayed at a hotel there for 2 nights to explore London. Super convenient location and even better if you're a Harry Potter fan! The train from Dover was very easy to use and you'll most likely be surrounded by others doing the same exact thing.

I believe we took the Underground from King's Cross to Paddington and jumped on the Heathrow Express back to the airport when we headed home - I can't remember 100% if this was what we did, but we definitely used the trains. Again, cheap and convenient - even with 2 suitcases. I found the tube system pretty easy to figure out overall once you used it a few times!
