Help with renting

I am a DVC member and we have 270 points with an April use year. We are interested in taking several family members to DW in Nov/Dec of 2006. We obviously get our full allotment of points in April '06. First question is, I can borrow those points and make a revservation at the 11 month window which would be around December of this year right? Now if those points don't cover everything I need, which I doubt they will, do I need to rent points from someone who can make the reservation at the same time as me. Also I read that a member can transfer points to another member. Can you purchase someone's points(sort of like renting I guess) and have them transfer the points to you. All that making sense! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, when you make the reservations for November/December '06, you can use your April '06 points. You can also borrow any extra that you need from your April '07 points.

When you make the ressies, you will not be "borrowing" the '06 points, you will be using them in their original use year.

If you want to pay to have someone else's points transfered to your account, you can do that, but those other points, your '07 points could be borrowed for you to use as well.

I believe they base everything on when the reservation is for - not when your calling to reserve the room. So as long as the points will be available when you'll be at the resort - you're good to go!

You are in your 2005 UY. You can borrow one year from the future i.e. 2006 UY. You can have points transfered into your account as long as you have not transfered points out of you account this UY.

So you will have to borrow your 2006 points, use any 2005 points you have left and have another DVC member transfer points into your account if you need them. You cannot borrow any 2007 point untill you are in your 2006 UY, i.e. after April 2006.

Yes, you can make these reservations 11 months ahead, and you can use your '06 points and borrow what you still need from your '07 points for the reservation.

Just remember that if something gets cancelled, some days for instance, those '07 points should still be used. That way, the "extra" points would be '06 points that could still be banked if you are within the banking window.

This is true! I called member services b/c I was looking to make a ressie for June 2006, but my use year is Feb. And (to furthur complicate things) I have no points left from 2005, and will not get any in 2006 (already used them!) - so I will have to borrow from 2007 to book my trip. They said I can borrow from my 2007 points when I book my trip this November 2005 b/c everything goes by your trip dates, not the date you book.

Bob - I spoke to member services, and they informed me I could borrow from my 2007 use year during my 2005 use year in order to book a trip for June of 2006. They told me as long as my trip was in the 2006 use year, it was not a problem.

I like CarolMN's way of explaining points and Use Years:

With an April Use Year,
your '05 points can be used for stays from Apr 1, 2005 - Mar 31, 2006
your '06 points can be used for stays from Apr 1, 2006 - Mar 31, 2007
your '07 points can be used for stays from Apr 1, 2007 - Mar 31, 2008

You want to book a stay for Nov/Dec '06. Your '06 points can be used for that stay because your trip dates fall between Apr 1, 2006 and Mar 31, 2007. If you borrow your '06 points into your '05 Use Year, they will expire on Mar 31, 2006 and cannot be used for your Nov/Dec '06 trip, so do NOT borrow your '06 points into your '05 Use Year for this trip!

If your '06 points are not sufficient for your Nov/Dec '06 trip, then you have a couple of options:

1) You can borrow some of your '07 points into your '06 Use Year. Those borrowed '07 points then become '06 points and can be used for stays between Apr 1, 2006 and Mar 31, 2007, which covers your Nov/Dec '06 trip. Those points will expire on Mar 31, 2007 so if you end up cancelling your trip or some family members drop out and you downsize to a smaller villa, just be aware that you cannot move those points back into their original Use Year. Borrowing is a "final" transaction.

2) You can pay another member to transfer some points into your account. Transferring points can be a bit tricky and there can be consequences so make sure you read the fine print about transferring points. There is a great post by Disneyberry (called something like "Transferring Points 101") that spells out all the details.

Edited to add: Forgot to mention that if you still have some '05 points left, you still have time to bank some of them into 2006. They then become '06 points and can also be used towards your Nov/Dec '06 trip.
