Hi everyone,

DS will be taking his first trip overseas to the UK around Dec 20 to visit his GF who is attending the Univ of Nottingham. He'll be touring the UK with her and her group.

I see there are 2 major airports in London. DS is departing from Lansing or Detroit, Mi probably on United. I am confused as to which airport he should fly into.

What are his options for traveling to Univ of Nott area to meet her?

Thanks,

herc.

Hi

Nottingham / London isn't 'my' part of the UK, but I'll try to help.

If he has a choice of Gatwick or Heathrow for arrival in the UK, Heathrow would be better, geographically, for reaching Nottingham. However, if he's relying on public transport (which it sounds as though he will be), then there's probably not much difference between any of the London airports, as he'll almost definitely need to transfer in central London for onward travel to Nottingham.

The main transport options are coach (bus) or train. Both run regular services London / Nottingham.

Maybe someone with more local knowledge will be able to give more specific advice. :)

Ok I am local.

Heathrow - Train to Paddington, Tube to Kings Cross, Train to Nottingham

Gatwick - Train to Waterloo, Tube to Kings Cross, Train to Nottingham

It is fairly straight forward, and the tube is a lot easier than it looks.

Does he have to fly into london?

There is an airport very near Nottingham, Nottingham East Midlands, also Birmingham International which has a Direct rail link to Nottingham which is a short bus ride away from the main campus and Halls

The transfer time from london to nottingham is about 2 hours and is easy but sadly on the most uncomfortable trains ever and because of the distance pushes up the cost.

My partners parents live in Nottingham and they get the gatwick express train which they say is very reliable so if he does need to fly into London i's recomend Gatwick as it does have much better rail links.

Thanks for the info, everyone!

David, I'll check airfares into those other two airports.
