I"m a teacher in her school, and feel so embarrassed that I can't even BEGIN to figure this out. So here goes:

"The whole face of a clock shows 60 minutes. 1/2 of the face would show ____ minutes. 1/4 of the face would show _____ minutes."

Okay, I get that part! (the answers are 30 and 15)

Here's the rest:

"Half past 2:00 would be ___________. Quarter to 3:00 would be ________. Quarter after 4:00 would be _________."

Okay, so we looked at a clock, and I can see that when the hands are showing 2:30 that the clock is divided into 3/4 and 1/4 --- but what's the answer?? Same with the others: Quarter to 3:00 divides the clock in half. What about quarter after 4:00?!??!?!

I don't get it!!!

To me, it looks like they just want the time..

half past 2:00 is : 2:30

teaching the concept of "half past, quarter till", and where those terms come from, in comparison to what the time is, when someone uses these fractions, to state the time.

I'm a para.. this is what I deal with.. 6 grades of deciphering what the teacher wants on the worksheet. :teacher:

It is fractions. You are using half past, quarter to and quarter after (half/quarter) to relate to the part of a clock face. I would use the times shown by those fractions.

Okay! We're just writing in the time like 2:30, 2:45 and 4:15.

Thanks! (I still don't get it!) LOL!:confused3

half past 2 would be 30mins or 1/2 the face of the clock
quarter to 3 would be 45 minutes or 3/4 the face of the clock
quarter after 4 would be 15 minutes or 1/4 the face of the clock

Now I really am terrible at math but I think the answers are:

Half past 2:00 = 1/2
Quarter to 3:00 = 3/4
Quarter after 4 would be = 1/4

Now I am probably WAY wrong but that was my guess....and my DD11 would go to school saying...'But my mom said that was right :confused3 ' :lmao:

Let us know what the answers really are...now I'm curious!

The problem - the instructions that are included in these workbooks are all too vague. Without an example, you sometimes have to guess what they are looking for.

Is this Everyday Math?

Well, I'm not sure. We do Everyday Math, but this came home on a weird looking worksheet, NOT the EDM worksheets I'm used to getting. So I'm not sure if it's EDM or a supplement.

I still say quarter of (not even quarter to) and quarter after when stating time and you would not believe how many people do not know what time i just told them it was, LOL!

Time can be one of the hardest things to teach a kid IMHO!

have fun!

As soon as I saw your post I was guessing it had something to do with Everyday Math! I dont know the answer...sorry. Typical for me though-half the time Im stumped by wonderful Everyday Math!
