Help with daughter's first period during our vacation

Don't give her birth control pills, she just can't get it once and then not get it because she's on vacation. She has to learn that it's now a fact of life. It's really no big deal and I'm sure everything will work out fine. At least she didn't get it on the trip.

I wouldn't worry too hard, mine was never regular in the beginning... I first got my period when I was 11 and didn't have it again for three months, then I had it for 3 weeks!!

It's so irregular at that time.... but then again, I was irregular until I started taking birth control pills... so who know :confused3

The worst part for me was I had severe endometriosis (cured after the birth of my DD) but my periods before that were so excrutiating that I had to stay home from school, my gyn called them labor pains and believe me when it came time to deliver my DD I know for sure that the reason why I swore "it wasn't so bad" was because of those horrible periods before I had her! I would be curled up on the floor, I really hope she doesn't go through that as well... it will break my heart

To those of you that say to give her tampons to use.....its not so easy to do. Trust me from one who tried......I hope she isn't traumatized for life by her attempt to use them that summer........not every girl is ready for tampons at such a young age.

I had to LOL reading this post.... I am almost 26 and very happily married ;) , had a child completely natural when i was very young..... and I still won't use tampons, I tried one time about 4 years ago and lets just say without offering too much information it ended very embarassingly and believe me, I am very outgoing so for me to be mortified... it was bad! :rotfl:

I just can't relax enough to use them so I decided that I will deal with pads

So yea, I wouldn't expect a young girl to use them....
DD is 9 and starting to show signs of puberty.... I can about bet she will have hers in the next couple of years too :sad1:

Tampons can be helped by using a little KY Jelly - and just make sure that they are not in for more than a few hours, as TSS can occur.

Her period probably won't be regular for a long time. My daughter got her first while we were camping. It was no big deal since we were expecting anytime (she was exactly 12.5).

It stinks but it is part of being a woman. I don't think your OB/GYN will do anything for a 12 year old who might have her period on vacation! Especially since it is just for convenience.

My dd12 (today!) got her first period memorial day weekend, when we were camping - fortunately, I had mine, and was packing. She got it again a few weeks ago 2 days before a rustic (no electric or water) camping trip with SIL - you know, she survived. It's not regular, this early on, so it's hard to judge when it's coming. She gave up on the tampon. I would never consider having her take hormones this early on - it really was no big deal.

congrats to your dd! But I doubt your gyn is going to put her on BC pill just so she doesn't get it during your vacation in Sept. I would really rethink this. Teach her about th eother options & see how her flow goes- she may be irregular for a few months or she might be regular- you won't know until she has had a few periods under her belt so to speak.

What I usually do for myself is to get a pack of birth control to offset it during our vacations and it works out pretty good. But what about her? I guess I can just ask my OBGYN. Anyone else have this same thing happen to their daughters. She has just turnded 12 in May. Thanks!

Did I read this wrong or are you considering asking your OB/GYN about giving your 12-year-old birth control pills to avoid her period during vacation? :confused3 I have never heard of anyone doing that! I wouldn't give my dds bc pills at 12. She will survive just like every other woman in the world has. :)

I know some people are suggesting to try tampons, but I just wanted to let you know to be prepared that if your DD does try them, it may not work out.

My DD13 got her period at 10yo & it came every month following that first time. Well last summer (she was 12yo) she got it on our first full day at WDW. She always gets it for 8 days & we were on a 9 day trip at BCV!! Tampons were out of the question & every afternoon while we swam in SAB, she spent in the room...thank goodness she'd brought her laptop!!

We ended up extending our trip by an extra day just so she could have another day in SAB.

We check-in to BCV for a 10 day trip this Monday...thank goodness she got her period 4 days ago!!

Here's a little pixiedust: in hopes that your DD won't have it during your trip.

I didn't understand you post? Why won't tampons work? Did she just not want to use them?

I wish my mon would've did tampons with me. She only gave me pads and never said a word about tmapons. She told me I couldn;t swim on period days, etc. *** was she talking about??? When I left home I finally was brave enough to try out tampons after hearing more about them. I will never wear a pad again, EVER. (I only have fot the few weeks after having kids) I can't imagine why she wouldn't have taught me about them. As long as you change the m regularly, you are OK. Pads always gave me a rash or irritation from day one, so you would've thoguht she would've shown me the alternative. But my mom wasn;t good on that kid of stuff. She never told me about shaving or about deoderant, I jsut kind of started using them on my own. And once she made some comment on her her mother wasn; any good becuase she had to learn about personaly hygene all on her own? And I thought then she must not be any good either. LOL!

My dd12 has been searching for her "dare not speak it's name" for months now - I guess at that age, things are a little smaller (unlike mom of 5 who prays her tampon doesn't fall out when she sneezes...:rotfl2: )

You last line is so hysterical its killing me LOL LOL LOL :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

My DD started early this month for the first time at almost 13. She will be 13 in September. It didn't last but a couple days and it was very light. Her twin sister has not started. I know we will likely have to deal with this on our March trip.

Not every girl would feel comfortable trying tampons from the start. My 10yo daughter was so driven to go to the pool she took a mirror and a book into the bathroom with her and she didn't come out until she was successful. I was actually quite proud of her.

I didn't start until I was 15 and my crazy mother told me that if I used tampons no boy would want to marry me. I had very heavy periods and back then they didn't have the stick-in-the-panties pads--you had to wear this stupid belt and tie them on. And they leaked.:headache: When I was a senior I made the majorette squad and had to wear these little tight outfits. Mother finally gave in and told me to try tampons.:sad2: I was so relieved, but she cried for days.

OMG:rotfl2: I totally forgot about "Belts". I started my period at 13, it was the summer of 1986. I was staying with my dad and stepmom for a few weeks. The day I got it I told her and asked her for some "stuff". Oh, BTW she is only 9 years older than me so she was only 22 at the time. She goes in the bathroom, gets something from the closet and tells me it's in there on the counter. I go in, shut the door, find some crazy looking pad and a weird elastic contraption. I open the door, and I'm like, what IS this stuff?? She says it's a belt and a pad, you put the belt on and attach the pad. Me, "Hello, it's 1986, they invented the kind that stick to your underwear! Don't you have THOSE? You're not 50, you are only 22!!"
Well she bought me some, then bought some for herself and threw out the belts.:woohoo: (I used any chance I could to rub in the fact that she was so young, but she turned out to be a great stepmom:hug: )

I am the tampon expert - show one cousin how to do it, then they all start asking. It is not hard and they are so appreciative of the fact that they can swim, wear cute outfits and not have to think about their period.

My husband laughs cause I seem to buy tampons all the time to give to my cousins or friends kids or neighbor kids. I only get my period 4 times a year (thanks to Seasonale), but you would not know it from the number of tampon boxes that go through my house!

My one cousin cried last June - it was 90 plus degrees, humid etc and she wanted to swim so bad. Presto chango became a tampon user and had a great vacation.

My DD12 got hers for the first time last summer (the day she was supposed to go to the beach with my mom). She knew all about it and was still soooo upset when it came. Only this summer did I brooch the subject of tampons with her because she was going to a family member's house and really wanted to go swimming. I explained everything to her and into the bathroom she went. She came out and said it was okay, but she still preferred the pads. The reason I nudged about the tampons was because we're going to Discovery Cove in August (a surprise) to do the dolphin swim and I didn't want that to be her first time using them (if need be). She has since used them during her periods two more times and has now asked me to buy more of them because she prefers the tampons over pads. :yay:

One quick word of advice. When I was a teen I talked a friend into trying them. I guess we didn't stress enough that you need to REMOVE the two cardboard pieces. We were wondering why she was walking like a mummy! :rotfl:

I'm sorry I wasn't clear about that.

She has attempted them...but without success. And believe me, we've (me, friends, her swim coach, ) & she just can't get it. Maybe when she's older.

My dd had hers there as well. She is 12 and does not want to try a tampon yet so she will just avoid the pool. She is most comfortable when she wears a fitted tight (girdle like garment or tight bicycle shorts)under her outfit(don't ask??) she will go anywhere as long as she has it on.I guess it feels safe to her...

One more thing. I don't know about anyone else's daughter, but I think bringing Midol along "just in case" is a good idea.

I got mine on my 13th birthday, great gift I wanted to give it back. I too remember those wonderful bulky pads and belts that just never seemed to give the right protection. My DD got her 1st when she was 12 1/2 the night before we left for Disney World. Late night run to the store to make sure we had enough supplies. Told her what to do and off we went just making a few more pit stops along the way. It was also the only trip that we ever drove to Florida on. Both DD's were not very regular the first few months but they have had it on vacations and we have all survived, its a part of being a girl.
