We are traveling to the World in February 2017. It's been so long since we last went, that I can't remember some booking procedures. I'm trying to figure out if we should go ahead and book now and then change to a discount when it finally comes out. Or just wait on the discount.

I can't remember if I book now, then change to a discount later, is a whole new reservation? As in, do they have to refund my money and then I repurchase the package. I hope this makes sense. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you go thru a reputable TA like WhiteGloveDestinations for example... you can book now thru them and they'll keep watch on any future discounts and make you aware of them and make the adjustments... doesn't cost you any more than booking it yourself thru Disney. (not affiliated with them but have used them repeatedly with good success..)
We are also going in Feb. see ya then!!

Good to know. Thank you. I normally do all the booking of everything myself. I love the planning part and I'm slightly a control freak. Lol.

If you are going regardless of a discount and you must have a particular resort and room category, book now. If you are only going if there is a discount or if you have flexibility with dates and resorts/room categories, I would wait until the discounts come out. Yes, you can, theoretically, modify an existing reservation to a discount reservation IF the resort and room category you have booked is included in the discount. But it is much, much easier to simply make a new reservation than modify an existing one. Particularly on discount release days, the website can get glitchy and phone hold times can get long. It's just easier to grab a discount online as soon as it becomes available.

If you go to the Discounts section of the Resort page on the DIS, you may already find a February discount watch thread. I would simply keep checking this site daily for an announcement of discounts.

Yep, I'm the planning control freak too... but it helps to get the big stuff outta the way. There is a possiblity that if you wait too long to book (waiting for the discounts) the amount of rooms available at the resort of your choice are all taken. They do allow 'X' amount of rooms for each discount package or special deal.
