Every spring we take a bunch of our plants out to the patio. They really enjoy the sunshine over the summer. Then, every fall before it freezes we bring them back inside.

I have one airplane plant (or some would say spider plant) that the ants seem to love. Every fall when I bring it back into my dining room, a colony of ants comes in with it. DH's theory is that I should just get rid of the plant, but I've had it for years. I got the "baby" when I was in college and I've nurtured it forever. It's huge and I don't want to throw it away.

Tonight is the night we are bringing in the plants. DH says he is planning to flood it by putting a slow hose on it all evening. Maybe that will run them all off before the move. Any other ideas? I hate fighting the battle with these little monsters. No poison we've found has ever worked (and we have to be careful with a cat and 2 dogs in the house).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cold air seems to kill the ants off pretty well. Could you leave the plant in the garage (so that it would maybe be too cold for the ants but not for the plant) until they die?
