Help- we need to cancel our reservation!!

My husband has fallen and fractured his ankle and they plan to do surgery tomorrow. We are supposed to arrive at WDW on June 28. I called to change and they explained the holding account etc.

Do you think I should try to rent this reservation? If so-how do I go about doing so?

Anyone have to use the holding account??

I am sooo very upset right now-I just do not know what to do. Our schedule does not allow for another vacation until Dec-January and we have a February use year.

My understanding is that I have to use the points in holding before Jan 31 and can only book 60 days ahead of time.

Unless your husband will be unable to travel, why not go ahead and go on vacation. What better place to rest up than in a DVC resort? If your entire family is going, you could still enjoy much of your vacation. If your husband needs constant attention after surgery, forget my suggestion. I realize no one knows for sure how they will be until after the operation. Just trying to help. Sending some pixie dust your way. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you and your family.

Why not wait until you see if your husband can still do Disney or not? They do have scooters to rent for those who can't walk.

And if you decide you can't go now, you should still be able to go in January before your Jan 31 deadline, right? I don't think January is a busy time at DVC so you should be able to get a room with only 60 days to book it. (Not positive that's how holding works because I've never had to do it...)

I was thinking of calling tomorrow and trying to switch from arriving June 28 and leaving on July 5th to arriving on July 4th and leaving on July 11. We are staying at OKW in a one bedroom. Does anyone know if they had any availability over the weekend after the 4th? We have the evening of the 4th reserved...we would just need the rest of the days.

I figured this would give him one more week to get better. I am taking two little girls and we are going alone so it will be a little difficult....but the girls already knew we were not going to do a lot of park time and we were spending more time swimming and relaxing!!

We cannot go after the middle of July because of both of our work schedules and my daughter's camp and other activities. If we are unable to change anything...I guess January will have to work!

I called Saturday and they had availability at OKW i believe (and don't shoot me if my memory is slipping) for July 5-9. I'm not sure if that helps but maybe they have the other dates you're looking for. I was only asking about those dates. I wish your husband all the best and hopefully he can rehab at Disney. By the way if you cancel your points go right into your holding account and you have 60 days to use the points or you'll lose them.

To clarify, holding points expire at the end of your current UY and you only have a 60 day window to book out.

As a fellow ankle-"fracturer" with surgery following, I can share that my 2 kids and I went to DW while I was still on crutches. We rented a scooter, stayed at OKW and had a blast. My kids will tell you that having the scooter got us to the front of the lines. H/e, that being said, I don't think I could have gone anywhere for the first 2 weeks post-op. We were supposed to go to DL the week after my surgery (or possibly within less than a week) and my orthopod would not clear me to fly b/c of the fear of blood clots. Good luck with whatever you can get to work for you.

Most of the lines are wheelchair/ECV accessible and having a scooter (also called ECV) or wheelchair will not affect your wait in line. People with experience have posted that in about 50% of the attractions, the wait will be just the same as other guests not using a scooter, in about 20-25% of lines the wait may be shorter (not always by much) and in about 25-30% of lines, the wait will be longer. So, it kind of evens out and the ones where you won't be waiting as long are because something about the line and/or loading is not accessible. There are also some shows where wheelchair and ECV users are brought in early; that's because there are limited numbers of spaces to park wheelchairs and ECVs and the CMs need to divide them from the rest of the guests so that they don't let more in than will fit.
That is what we have found in going to WDW over 20 years with someone using a scooter and a DD using a wheelchair.

If his doctor clears him to go that close to surgery, I'd suggest you visit the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the disABILITIES Board. There are phone numbers and links to places the rent scooters and wheelchairs; also information about renting from the parks. The park ECVs are first come, first serve though, so if you need to make sure you have one, getting one from off-site is the way to go.

I did not have to cancel Disney - but once had to cancel Las Vegas 3 days out because my husband tore his achilles and had surgery. He could not travel for a while because of the fear of clots, as mentioned above. He was casted for about 6 weeks, but maybe for an ankle it would be less and he will be comfortable traveling sooner. My husband was not up to longer travel (flying) and "walking" about for about 10 weeks. I think it is a personal comfort issue that he will have to decide.

Thanks for all the replies. The surgery went very well but have decided to change the reservation until January. About 1/2 the points went into holding and the other half we will be able to bank. MS was very understanding!!

We do plan on going somewhere in late July for a few days but not take such a big trip.

I told my husband that since we will have two years of points-we may need to think about taking a cruise!!
