This is sometimes a BIOS setting, i.e., it isn't part of the operating system but rather something in your display device. It is a very common feature of laptops. Typically, you can access this setting via software in the control panel for the display, but not always... sometimes it is a special keystroke.

What computer are you using? (make and model number)
