Our yard, mailbox and front pourch have become a haven for Black Widows. Atleast once a day we see one, kill it and then we see more the next. Last week the mailbox had three, and tonight two on the patio... I'm worried someone is going to get bit, and the girls are so small.
Is there anything that repels them? Scary thing is our front door has a 1/4 gap between the door and the floor, right next to where I found two tonight... YIKES!

Yikes, that's terrible! My friend's little nephew just suffered a black widow bite (it was in his baseball glove  ) and though he was eventually all right, he was in AGONY for many hours in the hospital after the bite. Scary!

Anyway, I'm not a big proponent of pesticides, but when the black widows start getting out of control around my parents' house (many black widows on their patio, etc.) my parents call an exterminator, who sprays something--maybe malathion?--and that is the only thing that does the trick. My parents also try to really keep things shaken up around the house--they rearrange the patio furniture daily, sweep often, just generally "disturb" the places black widows like to hide. They run the garden hoses often, too, but still when they turn the water on a big black widow will sometimes pop out...EWW!

Hope your "attack" will end soon!

I second the suggestion for a professional exterminiator. They will do a good job and most provide a warranty on the their work.

I know it may cost a little more, but IMHO it's worth it.

I hope you get this taken care of-- you gave me the willies-- I second an exterminator ASAP!!

YIKESSSSSSSSSSSSSS:earseek: I won't sleep tonight !!!!!!
I can say I have never seen a black widow (hope that will not be bad luck now lol) and I live in FLORIDA!!!! OK looking up at ceiling now ,,,,,, HOPE you get rid of them,,just please do not send them right up the road to Titusville..

I think this is too dangerous a situation not to call a professional.

That would freak me out:earseek:

Call the bug man ASAP!

ACK! I just realized you were in FL! I hope I don't get any here. My family lives in Melbourne. I'm glad I'm not going for a visit in the near future.

Soon as a read the title....I thought PROFESSIONAL !!

Call today...

I've been on a black widow hunt for months now- we live below Atlanta in Georgia- I never saw them until this year- we are remodeling our garage to make a family room and have upset a great many of the bug population- :scared:

The scorpions are not too happy with us either - at least the scorpians are non-pois. here in Georgia- I got stung by one when I was pregers with my last baby (96) :) and spent the night in the ER because some people have an allergic reaction to their stings-

My boys are 8 and 10 and have joined the hunt-:magnify: I make them wear heavy mens work gloves and high boots and they daily search for the buggers under rocks and around the woods and house foundation-and I pay them for every one that they find- They have earned a good bit of vacation spending money by "hunting" -I kill what they find if need be - I also spray around my doors and windows on a regular basis- on weekends I put the high pressure spray nozzel on the hose and blast any cracks and crevices to dislodge them- they are everywhere here- must be the dry weather we've had this spring.

So far the boys have unearthed several snakes-:scared1: (we have to be very careful because we have like 5 different pois. snakes in our area- the cats love to catch them- ) scorpions, black widows and brown recluse spiders- I guess they are mini- steve the crock hunters but they hunt insects !:earseek:

It freaked me out when I first saw them too!- We never walk barefooted in or around our house . We do a bed sheet check every night before bed and we ALWAYS shake our cloths/shoes/gloves and so on before they are put on- we've gotten use to being cautious::yes::

OH.... MY.... GOD!

I seriously think I'd freak out. I'm so afraid of spiders, just seeing this title made me go.... "ewwwww!!!!".

I'd most definately spend whatever it took to nuke 'em. Call the Orkin man! :D Quick!!!!

As much as I love the weather in the south, the snakes, spiders, scorpions (YIKES)...roaches or whatever they are called...there is NO WAY I could live there.

Good luck to you! ( shiver )

YIKES!!! Am I glad we don't find them here in England!
I can't even handle seeing the little spiders, never mind huge, gigantic, big....whatever you want to call them spiders!!!
Good Luck with them!

This post has brought my fear of spiders to a whole new level!!!

And I keep telling DH that I want him to get stationed in FL! YIKES! I really dont think I could take it!!! :scared1: :scared1:

I'm freaking out just thinking about them! Yuck. I'm terrified of spiders, let alone deadly ones! Can you call pest control? Can they do something?

This country has been around now for nearly 228 years and yet I find it hard to believe how insensitive we continue to be. Profiling people based on their race or maritial status is just not right. To try and inflict harm on a black female postal worker who has lost her husband is just wrong. All she is trying to do is bring you your mail and yet you keep trying to kill her. I have heard of people going postal but this seems a little overboard don't you think? Or are you saying this woman is trying to steal your mail and that is why you are trying to kill her? Either way, taking the law into your own hands will only result in anarchy. I think Rodney King said it best when he asked, "Can't we all just get along?"

I'd move. Far away to a place these monsters don't exist. Seriously.

That was my other thought! I could just see myself FREAKING out and telling DH we had to sell the house.....

better yet...get a PO Box so you dont have to touch Mailbox.

BTW - you might want to inform your postal carrier of your mailbox guardians!

:badpc: :scared: :faint:

Pretend that's a spider instead of a computer!!!

Our first home was infested with brown recluse spiders. We did not know that until we did some work in the bathroom. I just hope and pray we did not bring any into this new house with us. We've been here almost 4 years and have yet to see any.

Good luck....call a professional. It's the only thing that kept our spiders under control.

I HATE SPIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my!!!! I have problems with our little furry nonpoisonous ones here in Michigan!!!!:earseek:
