I've been on a black widow hunt for months now- we live below Atlanta in Georgia- I never saw them until this year- we are remodeling our garage to make a family room and have upset a great many of the bug population-
The scorpions are not too happy with us either - at least the scorpians are non-pois. here in Georgia- I got stung by one when I was pregers with my last baby (96)

and spent the night in the ER because some people have an allergic reaction to their stings-
My boys are 8 and 10 and have joined the hunt-

I make them wear heavy mens work gloves and high boots and they daily search for the buggers under rocks and around the woods and house foundation-and I pay them for every one that they find- They have earned a good bit of vacation spending money by "hunting" -I kill what they find if need be - I also spray around my doors and windows on a regular basis- on weekends I put the high pressure spray nozzel on the hose and blast any cracks and crevices to dislodge them- they are everywhere here- must be the dry weather we've had this spring.
So far the boys have unearthed several snakes-

(we have to be very careful because we have like 5 different pois. snakes in our area- the cats love to catch them- ) scorpions, black widows and brown recluse spiders- I guess they are mini- steve the crock hunters but they hunt insects !
It freaked me out when I first saw them too!- We never walk barefooted in or around our house . We do a bed sheet check every night before bed and we ALWAYS shake our cloths/shoes/gloves and so on before they are put on- we've gotten use to being cautious
