HELP! Starbucks overcharged me yesterday and now I am negative in my account!!!

Is this really a serious post? If I knew that I had $11 to my name I probably wouldn't spend 50% of it on a drink at Starbucks. Jmo

OMG, no kidding! This is the first thing that came to mind when I read the op but I was afraid to post it for fear of getting flamed.:rotfl:

I am wondering how you are going to prove any of this without a receipt.

That's a good point. And, since the OP didn't look at the receipt, it is possible that the receipt was for $11.88 (i.e. the cashier put the wrong things on the receipt).

Good luck!

Me too, because my first thought and probably everybody else's, was why would anyone spend that on an account they knew had that little in plus pending debits? If there's money in other accounts, why not spend that? Or use cash? I do know no one in my family would be buying anything from Starbucks if money was that tight.

The things people post here amaze me. My advice, when posting, is not to give all those details. How about just saying, I was overcharged by a store and it made my account go negative and now what do I do? Another idea is to have an overdraft that kicks in. Heck, all my accounts will go to savings if checking is overdrawn if I don't have an overdraft (which I do).

Everyone,
Yes, this is a serious post and yes, his is my FUN account and I only use it for things like this. I have more then $11 to my name but this account only had $11 in it until I get paid again. I purchased a few things this weekend but forgot how much as left.

My SIL is the branch manager and she said that I should deposit a few dollars in my account via the ATM tonight so it will get posted as the pending items will not post until tomorrow night.

Starbucks also said that IF I get any charges due to this, they would pay for them.

I am sorry if people feel the need to criticize me about Starbucks purchases but if shouldn't really matter WHAT I got. I knew this purchase would bring my account down a few dollars more but would still have a few before I got my next check.

Thanks!

Diane

But think how inspiring it is to know that so many people can manage to get through life without ever making a mistake!

I stand by my comment about getting overdraft protection on the account because clerks and account holders do make mistakes.

Yeah, I had the same thought.
My second thought had to do with the "pending transactions".
My third thought was, "Is this serious?"

I had the same thoughts.

I don't even understand why people have accounts that typically have a few bucks in them. Can't you just keep some change in a wallet? Avoids problems.

People do make mistakes and I think the risk of making one and having to pay a penalty is not worth the 'convenience'? of having $11 in a debit account.

It seems kooky to me.

I know that you couldn't possibly mean that in a sarcastic manner, since sarcasm isn't allowed here.

I stand by my original statement and those opinions expressed by quite a few others. You don't spend a bank account down to nearly zero, even if it is your "fun" money. And if you have no idea what your balance is but you know that it's pretty low, you don't make an unnecessary purchase and hand over your debit card to pay for it. That's just asking for trouble. Even my kids know not to do that and they're all early twenty-somethings.

one thing that might be helpful to know in the future is how long transactions are "pending" on this account. some of my credit cards will have pending for 24 hours, others 48 hours. in this case it makes all the difference. also then you need to know how long it takes to post a refund.

some banks will have refunds pending for more than charges, which can put people in hot water in these situations. i completely understand, i worked in retail for years, and cashiers make mistakes, sometimes those touch screens that help them move faster can cause errors. in a place like starbucks they don't realize until after the card is swiped and then even if you void your bank will see it as a charge and refund.

glad to hear it will work out and starbucks is so nice about it.

Thus the reason I refuse to use debit cards.

The problem is 'not' the debit card, but having so many transactions coming out of an account that you only leave $5- $11 (whatever) extra to 'play' with, then spending some of that on a drink! Would be a nervous wreck for sure cutting expenses that close! :confused3

I can't understand having any account with a balance of less than $1000. If you keep less than $1k in it, it probably shouldn't be a separate account.

Furthermore, use a credit card. They are free, have rewards, and allow you to not pay for something if someone makes a mistake. In this case, you get Starbucks to fix it before you pay the bill.

I would throw like $40 in the atm like now.

Call the bank in am when they first open, explain the situation.

Relax more then likely the charges will take a day or two to post.

Look into overdraft protection, for your slush fund.

Omg what a headache over a yummy drink ::yes::

Just deposit some cash into the ATM- the account gets credited the instant you do it. When they used to do it the old fashioined way where you put the money in an envelope and stuck that in the ATM there was a lag time, but now that you just stick the stack of bills straight in and it counts the money that way its credited right away.

I just hit reply to the last post, but it's related to the ATM comments. Many ATMs no longer accept deposits and some people do not bank locally, so a ATM deposit may not be the answer.

I bank with USAA so we have no local banks. Although, we do have a USAA smartphone app that allows you to take a picture of a check with your smart phone and deposit it. It's awesome. I do it with child support checks when/if they come in the mail. LoL. You annotate the back with your account number and that it is for electronic deposit only. Then you take a picture of the front and back (with the app), enter the amount of the check and hit deposit and it instantly shows in your account. You then have to write void across the check (and I file and keep for my records).

I always thought it silly to use a debit card for a small purchase-and this proves why

I don't get concept of an account for Fun items....so you have several accounts and one is just for Fast Food & Coffee?:confused3

My checking account gives me 'free checking" if I keep minimum of $200....so it never goes low

But if I ever DID have aproblem like this I'd switch $$ from my savings to checking online
