My dh built a wall using those concrete interlocking blocks. It's about 2' high. Well, my dd and her friend just came in the house to ask me what that is on the wall. So, I go out to check it out. It looks like big balls of silvery grey slime coming out from between the blocks. There are about 10 of them and they aren't soft or squishy!! They are rock hard! No, nothing was used to 'cement' the blocks together. There is just plain old loam behind the wall. Whatever it is wasn't there yesterday!! Anyone have any ideas?

Could be snails/slugs.

Does it look anything like this?

NOpe, whatever it is is really hard. Like an egg or something. Some of the 'balls' are the size of ping pong balls!! Ewwwww.

I'm guessing it is some sort of egg mass for some sort of creature, but I cannot venture a guess what...............P

I hope someone gives you the answer soon because I personally have Twilight Zone music in the back of my mind right now !

Ewww, Karen. They do sorta look like that. But they are really hard. Not that I'm going too near them. They could start sucking my brains out. Yeah...I'm hearing the music too.

Because of their moist skin, common snails are most active in damp weather and at night. When conditions become too dry, the snail will retreat into its shell and seal the entrance with a parchment-like barrier known as an epiphragm. Snails can often be found in this state under rocks in gardens or on a wall in a sheltered corner. When sealed away like this the snail goes into a state of suspended animation and can survive for several months without water.

Common snails feed by scraping a ribbon-like tongue covered in horny teeth called a radula, over their food. This allows them to scrape algae and lichen from the surface of rocks and walls. You can sometimes see the trails they leave behind as they eat their way through the algae on a damp wall.

They really are ugly but very common.

Oh yuck!!! I've just never seen anything like those shell things. We've had slugs/snails but never shells. Wonder if the banana slugs in the Pacific NW do the same thing.

I grew up in central Massachusetts and although nothing would surprise me here in Louisiana with all the critters and things, I never saw anything like you described when I lived in Mass. and we had a stone wall also. *Something* is hatching it sounds like. I'm sure it's harmless but please let us know if someone identifies what they are...I'm curious. Don't feel bad though. A couple weeks ago my cat brought a live salamander (called Mud Puppies down here ick) into the house. DH and son's had just left so 14 yr. old dd and I had to catch it. It was sooo nasty. It went under the recliner so I gave my dd the broom and told her to sweep him out while I lifted the chair so we wouldn't lose sight of him. We started, she got grossed out, started screaming and ran to her room. I managed to tilt the chair, sweep it out and I got a towel to pick it up and it was so slimy it fell out of the towel 3 times before I got it and the towel and threw the whole thing outside. It wasn't a snake but very snake like. DD and I were traumatized for hours. Needless to say you won't see me as a helper on Croc Hunter any time soon. :teeth:

I've never seen a banana slug turn into a hard creature - they have no shells! (if they get dry, they turn into sort of a banana raisin:crazy2: )

Maybe some type of cocoon? Are they stuck or can you pull them off?

Please keep posting - I really want to know how this one turns out!!

:rolleyes1 Okay....exactly how dumb can someone be??!!! Just talked to dh about the 'creatures' hatching in his new wall. (he's visiting his mom on the Cape) Well.....okay, all of you, go ahead...I won't mind. Start the laughing at me...I deserve it. He says..."Are they pretty big and greyish, oozing out?" "Yeah, yucky." I say. "Oh, you have to really watch out for the oozing crack/space filling foam monsters you know." I can almost die of embarrassment but thought that before I go, I should post here to let the other central Ma disers know there are no brain sucking slime balls here. I am just sooooooo stupid!!!! Going away, hanging her head.:rolleyes1

:rotfl: Well, it was fun while it lasted. I don't think you should have told us ;) Kept the suspense going :teeth:
At least now you can relax and no creature will grab you (at least not one coming out of the wall ).

I won't laugh at you. DH & I have decided to laugh at your DH instead for causing all the commotion. Why did he want to fill the spaces? I've never known anyone to do that.

BTW, this is the first time I've shared a thread topic with DH and asked his opinion. After filling him in on the latest, he asks me, "Is this all you have to do all day?" Well... not all day!:teeth:

Oh...dont worry, I immediately assume anything unidentifiable must be insect related and out to kill me!

Your blood pressure must be much lower now that he has let you know what it really is!
