HELP! School troubles...

According to a past participant, my school does not support the College Program at all and (according to her) my only option would be to withdraw for the quarter. She's not the only one who's done the program, though, and other internship programs (in New York, Philadelphia, etc) that take place during the school year receive credit.

I know it's highly unlikely that any of you are familiar enough with my college to give me specific advice, but regardless - I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and somehow gotten credit? If I'm forced to withdraw and thus disqualified from my merit scholarship then the fall 2010 program simply won't be an option for me, which absolutely and completely devastates me. I've been so involved with various Fall 2010 groups here and gotten to know so many wonderful people.

I don't understand why the CP gets NO credits and other programs do. Furthermore, we are allowed to enroll in courses at nearby Western Michigan University, which does recognize the program. I'm wondering if it's feasible for me to get credit from them and transfer it back to my school?

So the moral of the story is - what can I do to gain my school's support??

I was just about to recommend the WMU.. I haven't personally done it but I've read many accounts of people who did and were able to transfer back. Unfortunately I think that's the only way you'd be able to get credit, but you'd still be withdrawn from your school for a semester or so.

I'm sorry that your school won't give you credit! Mine won't either so I know how frustrating it is. I hope you can figure everything out!

I feel stupid suggesting this, but does your school offer online classes? Could a teacher approve certain classes as substitutions (or could you simply take classes that wouldn't count towards your major, but you could still be enrolled. Meaningless work, yes, but if you want to do the program really bad, it might be an option.) for other online classes?

Maybe you could just take 5 (or whatever the minimum is that you would need to be qualified for your scholarship) online and not even receive credit for the internship.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I have no idea if we offer any online courses at all here, actually, but I discovered that withdrawing does NOT necessarily mean my merit aid disappears! So it's not completely out of the question and I'm much less depressed now... the only thing I'm worried about is staying covered under my parents' health insurance.

So the way it works with like WMU, Purdue, etc is that you then pay their tuition, right? Because I have enough credits to graduate in four years even with withdrawing for a quarter, so if I can avoid paying tuition while on the CP that'd be utterly fantasmic.

That also would mean that you could keep your insurance, if you took credits there. You could even just take random online classes as a community college.

If you were receive credit through one of those schools then (most likely) you'd pay per credit so if you were going to be getting three credits from WMU it would be a couple hundred dollars instead of the thousands for a full semester. You wouldn't have to pay anything to your real school (unless it has fees for transferring credits...)

And for the insurance...you need to check with your provider. I took the semester off (I didn't take any classes or receive any credit for the CP) but I was still covered under my parents insurance.

I had the same problem. I took a leave of absence for the semester, and I am receiving 12 credits from CMU, they are one of the college partners listed on the website. Later my 12 credits will transfer back as general electives, but I really just did it to stay on my parents health insurance.
