Help ! Re-booking Tickets Question !

Hi everyone :)

For those who don't know, I'm shyboy72's fiancee and I've pretty much taken
over his account haha :) !! He had surgery on the 2nd of May because they
had found a brain tumor on an MRI that was done because he thought he had
gotten a concussion from a paintball trip. Because this happened, we had to
cancel our trip to Disneyland which was scheduled for the 22nd of June. I
called American Airlines to cancel the trip and they had no problem doing it.
Unfortunately I heard information incorrectly and thought that they would be
charging us $36 per person to re-book tickets.

I called them today because we are planning an upcoming trip on the 2nd of
October and the representative I talked to said that we had a $36 CREDIT.
This means that I would be spending an additional $138 per person to book
for October. Me, being a part time waitress & a full time college student
makes this HORRIBLE.

They said that I could contact American Airlines and get a note from his
surgeon, which I am doing tomorrow, and see if I can get everything waived
and have vouchers for this upcoming trip. Has anyone done this before ?
I want to know if it is possible for us at all to get these new departure dates
without having to pay the extra charge.

I think it is worth a shot. My BFF's DH ended up in the ICU with Type I diabetes. He was in his early 30s and had no idea he had it. It was right before they were scheduled to take a vacation and were flying. I think they were able to get their money back because of the situation. So in your case I would get the note from the doctor and try to appeal it with the airlines. It will take some time on your part, but if they waive the change fee, it will be great. Good luck and I hope your fiancee is doing much better:)
 

I got very ill from food poisoning and ended up in the hospital. Our flight was scheduled for the next day. They gave me a note which I gave to the airlines and they waived the fee for changing flights. This was Alaska Airlines but hopefully they all have the same policy. I hope it works out for you.
 
Thanks everyone for the positive messages :) It really is putting me at ease
about getting everything worked out. They said it would take 'em 10 days to
read my email and its only been two days. Also my fiancee's doctor sent the
note through the mail this morning, so I'm just waiting right now. I'll update
on what happens !

Oh and my fiancee is doing great !!! He's going back to work on the 15th !

I'm glad to hear he's doing ok! I'm crossing my fingers for you! (Unless that's bad luck..then I'm not..or something)

When are you planning to go next? Did I miss that?

It's good to hear that he's doing great! My DS's best friend's mother had a brain tumor removed a few weeks ago also, and she had a lot of complications with infection, etc. so it's great news that your fiancee is doing so well. I hope everything works out with the airline and that you guys have a great trip!

account, so here I am all on my own posting for the very first time under
my own name :) Now everyone will know who is posting !!!!

So far, I haven't received an email from American Airlines. They said it
would take 10 - 12 days for them to initially read my email. So we're still
waiting :( Although, his surgeon sent a note for us a two days ago. So it
should be here today. Other than that, we're still waiting.
