do I need to print shirt transfers as a mirror image so the names come out right? Makes sense?

Be sure to read your directions carefully. Generally, light transfers require you to flip the design and dark transfers do NOT. But again, read your instructions because this is a general practice and may not be the case 100% of the time.

Just completed my first batch of t-shirts last night and learned the hard way about waiting to pull off the transfer until it is completely cooled to get a nice smooth, glossy effect. On the few that I pulled it off right away, is there anything I can do to "fix" them? They look okay, but worried they won't be sealed properly enough to withstand washing-tricks with ironing with waxed paper or anything?
