Hi all. I am looking for names of companies that offer health insurance for those only working part time. I currently am self employed. I pay my own health insurance and am looking to perhaps pick up a part time job that offers healthcare as a benefit, so I can save myself this now hefty expense. I know Starbucks offers medical if you work 80 hours a month. Anyone know of any other companies that offer this? My thoughts are that for a little bit of my time, I can get my health insurance paid for and collect a little paycheck while doing it. Thanks.

You will find that some employers offer health insurance for part timers, but often the employee contribution to pay for the insurance can be quite high. I work for a hospital. All employees can get health insurance, but part timers pay a higher percentage of the cost than full time employees. Very few employers give their employees free health insurance, so you need to consider what your contribution would be to determine if it is worth it.

I believe Lowe's offers it for part timers. Or at least they used to. I know a bunch of companies are cancelling it for part timers because of the new healthcare law.

A bunch of companies are canceling pt insurance, so it may take some digging. UPS used to have unbelievable ins for PT(my cousin worked 20 wk while also running his own biz, it think they pd for all ins, if not super cheap). I know they don't offer family ins anymore, but may offer individual. McD,s probably still offers it, I believe Walmart does too. The plans usually are higher cost than most "good" insurance plans. My recommendation is if you are a relatively healthy person, by the cheapest ins you can find, that won't overwhelm you if you do end up hospitalized. The good thing about ins now is that your yearly physical is included at all levels, as well as immunizations Etc.

For UPS it will depend if the position is union or not (office work is non union in most areas) and what that union negotiated for part time employee benefits. UPS insurance has not been free for at least the last 20+ years and the cost started increasing that many years ago to where it was not inexpensive. At least in the are I worked in. I have heard Costco and Home Depo offered insurance for PT but not sure if it is still true.

Starbucks offers benefits to all partners who average 20 hours per week. Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, Education. Very affordable too

I was also going to suggest Starbucks.

I don't know your skillset, but many large corporations in the oil & gas industry have generous benefits for part-time employees. My DH is fulltime and we pay $4 a month for full coverage (excellent coverage) for our entire family (medical, dental and vision for our family of four). Part time employees pay $150 a month. Definitely not the good deal FT employees get, but not bad for the great insurance we have.

Apple retail offered insurance to part-timers when I worked for them, but it wasn't as good as what full-timers were eligible for. I think they became eligible after 90 days of employment.

Before you go this route, make very sure that it is worth it. Most employers that offer benefits to part timers pass along 100% of the premium costs, and I know several people who work 20-25 hours for no take-home pay to speak of because of those costs. That's fine if there is no opportunity cost to those hours worked, but if putting that time into your own business instead could yield enough to cover the premiums it might not be the best way to go.

I thought I read Costco offers benefits to part timers, but I have no first hand expirence with that.

I would agree with collen27, maybe focusing more on your full time could net you a better payout in the long run. Penalties aren't going to be too severe for a couple of years on the healthcare system.

Apple provides health insurance to PT employees immediately upon hire. Its a little more expensive than it is for full timers, but only by maybe $10/paycheck.

I'm glad to hear they improved that. It was even longer than 90 days when I was originally hired.

This won't be a popular opinion, but check out the benefit package at your local public school. Those "underpaid" educators are often well-compensated in untaxable benefits.

It's changed quite a bit over the years. When I was originally hired they didn't offer benefits to part timers. When they finally started giving them benefits, you had to be working there for a year, so I had a long wait ahead of me. Then they changed it to 90 days, and now its immediate. Really amazing perk. I'd never worked for any other company that gave any health benefits to part timers, and I have worked for several large corporations.

That's a really good idea if you live in an area where school employees still get those benefits. Around here benefits are being slashed left and right for school employees, particularly non-contract/non-union employees, and a lot of positions that used to be "mom jobs" (clerical, lunchroom, transportation) have been privatized.

Exactly the same at our hospital. Many of our part timers work just for the insurance coverage. They pay 100% of the premium but get it at group rate. They have to work at least 40 hours biweekly to be able to buy into the insurance.

Pearson offers it for any of their short-hour employees (20-35 hours per week). They are a great company and their benefits package is fantastic for part-timers.
