are they really as terrible as I've heard? The public middle schools. I'm having no luck finding a home I like in Yorktown near the school I'm fond of. Other option is a middle school that shares cafeteria, gym, and I forget what else with a high school! I think DS has enough to deal with having to move and changing from parochial to public school. Really don't think he needs high schoolers around!

I AM finding homes I like in Newport News!! :Pinkbounc But I want to get away from the expense of a parochial school. And everyone tells me the middle schools there are terrible. :( Anyone have a different experience/opinion?

Thanks!

No experience with the Newport News schools, sorry. I'll bump this back to page one for you, though :)

Sorry I can't help you on the Newport Schools, but I know the anxiety you are feeling...I am trying to get "personal" opinions from people on Cincinnati schools in case DH gets a job offer he's hoping for. Hang in hter, someone will have help!

did you try www.GREATSCHOOLS.NET ? Iknow it is basic info, but may be helpful. I have called schools in the past and asked to have them send me a newsletter or if there are any families willing to e-mail me with opinions of the school. It is a bold move, and I felt sort of strange asking, but believe it or not I did get some feedback.
Good Luck!

I live in Newport News and am getting ready to put my "baby" girl in middle school next year. We have just started really looking into options but I may be able to help a little. Some are better than others that's for sure. Same goes for the Elementary and High schools around here.

Let me know what kind of questions you have and maybe I can give you some insight. If you like you can email me at Dewtoo@cox.net .

I'll be sending you an e-mail, Shannon! ;)

Chichi...I did that search and visited some of the school websites last night. Not nearly all! A couple of the magnet schools. They seem to be doing wonderfully and have made great improvements. Then there are those that need improvement!! There's no middle of the road in that town! I find that strange. So then I would want to enroll him in a magnet school I suppose. Hmmmmmmmmmm...I guess I'll be e-mailing the realtor there. I definitely need a home I'm happy with. Wouldn't be happy with the ones I've seen in Yorktown for the price range I have in mind. It continues......................................... LOL!

Suzanne...Really? One of the principals at a magnet school there went to the same school you did. When I saw her picture I thought...Hmmm...looks like a snobby Boca woman! LOL! :teeth:

I would stick with Gildersleeve and Menchville for regular middle and high schools. I'm sure you could find a house within both zones. Gildersleeve is behind the District Admin office close to Christopher Newport University and Menchville is in the Oyster Point area in a nice section of town. Magnet is also a good suggestion if it works for your son. Good luck with your continued search.

Thanks, Sleepy! I'm not sure where that university is. I'll have to check on it. Oyster Point area I came across when I was there. I seemed to spend most of my time between Victory Blvd. and there. And was it Patrick Henry Mall on Jefferson? CONGESTED area, but loved the mall! ;)

Have you had any personal experience with those schools? Thanks!!

I did get your email, but I am fighting a virus and don't want to reply and spread it :( Hopefully it will be cleared up in the next few days but in the meantime.....

My 3 school aged kids are in Deer Park Elem. It's a magnet and they love it! My oldest did go to South Morrison for 2 years and we hated it! They have all 3 accelerated so much being in the magnet school. All 3 are ahead in their classes.

As far as middle schools, as of now we are leaning towards Crittendon. We are zoned for Hines but I will fight that one! Not a good school from what Ive heard! Crittendon has alot of technoogy programs that my DD is interested in. I say check into the magent schools and go for what will fit your DS best.

Our elem. school is an Enviromental Science maget. It's great and I can't say enough good things about the teachers and staff. They are just wonderful!

Hopefully I'll be able to email in a day or two! Good luck finding a house. (and you're right, Patrick Henry Mall is pretty awsome!)

FinFan...thanks for the link! I'll check into it.

Shannon...Crittendon was the first one I looked at. I'm sure DS could keep up. He has all A's and B's...as usual. :) Looks like a great place. Do you have to do anything special for a Magnet other than complete an application? Any testing, $$$, etc.?

To get in all you have to do is fill out an application. It took a year to get my dd into the elem magnet but that was when they first opened so the waiting list was long and of course we waited to late to put her on it. One good thing for us once a child is in the magnet school, the siblings get to follow. No more wiating lists.

There are no extra fees involved but I know at least at our school we get a lot of parental involvment. ex. = helping out on field trips, class treats, cut and paste workshops. It's fun though!
