HELP....my 2 year old won't eat (long story)

My second ds was 6 lbs at Birth and 22 lbs at 6mts. Then he slowed dramatically and was 28 at 18 mts. Then he just decided that he had way to much to do, to be bothered with eating. He wasn't losing any weight the doc wasn't worried. But as a mom..... to me it did not seem like he was eating enough to keep a bird alive. So we started what my neighbors affectionatly referred to as the drive. My DD was in school so it was just us, so it was easy. I am not suggesting this is a great idea simply that it worked for me. I got him strapped in his car seat put a disney sing along in the Cd player and we drove around the block for about half an hour. And he was offered his lunch and he ate every single day. Sang his songs and ate his lunch. I guess it is a little variation on tieing them to the high chair of past generations. But at least I knew he was eating somthing! He would have carnation instant breakfast ( because he refused milk) And as he got older I would get him a milk shake. Good luck and if he is not losing and is just gaining slowly he is ok. Consider getting a new pediatrician. Or at least consult one to calm yourself.

My DD was 30 pounds at her 3 yr old appointment, and 34 pounds at her 4 yr old appointment. Her pediatrician was not concerned. Brought up to the ped. that DD snored loudly most of the night. Ped. suggested she visit an ENT. The tonsils were so enlarged that DD was only barely eating enough to get by, because apparently large tonsils make swallowing food hard to do.

After her tonsils came out, she put 10 pounds on before she was 5. About 2 weeks after her tonsils come out, DD became a much better eater. Still picky, but at least she started to eat.

It just might be another thing to consider...

Good Luck!

I was going to suggest that you have your son checked by an ENT as well. A friend of mine went though a similar problem with her DD not eating. It went on for over 6 mo. Finally they took her to an ENT and it turns out her tonsils and adnoids were enlarged and were also causing signifcant post nasal drip. All of these things combined caused my friends DD not to be able to taste food well or have much of an appetite. She had surgery and within 2 weeks was a completely different child. She sat for meals and ate with gusto. She's always going to be petite but her weight is much more in line with a child her age.

I'm replying here but honestly haven't read all of the replies before mine, so forgive me if this is redundant. I just wanted to tell you about my little one.

She was born one day early at 5#9oz (my exact birth weight) She has ALWAYS been petite, but proportional. She has JUST recently made it to the 5th percentile line on her growth chart.
I am about 5' 5 1/2", her grandmas are 5' and 5'1". She has a great grandma who is under 5'. Dh is 5'8" His dad is about the same. My dad is a bit taller, maybe 5'10".

The pediatrician she had from birth to about 3 yrs old was very concerned. Once my dd gave up nursing we had to super concentrate her formula until she was about 18 months old, then instead of switching to whole milk, she switched to CREAM! She had the workups done--cystic fibrosis, thyroid, celiac disease, you name it. Everything was negative.

We moved and switched pediatricians and this one would tell me he'd stay up at night and worry about her and why she was so small. This pediatrician was over 6' tall. He wanted us to go to endocrinology for growth hormones and to have gentic workups done to see if she had a syndrome.

We have recently switched to another pediatrician in the same practice who is of average height. His comment at her last well check up was "well, she's small, but growing. looks good!" I think he's fine with ppl being average heights while the tall pediatrician expected everyone to be tall.

Now she is almost 10 (turns 10 in July) She is just about 48 inches tall. She is about 45 pounds! She is healthy, active, one solid muscle. When we're with other kids, size wise she fits in with the 1st or 2nd graders....she's in 4th grade. We are now getting asked "are they twins?" when ppl see my dd with my ds who is actually 2 1/2 years younger.

She eats well some days, not so well others. I never FORCE her to eat if she isn't hungry (I did enough eating when I wasn't hungry and am STILL trying to lose the weight from it!)

God made her small for whatever reason. Can't wait to see the BIG plans He has for her.
HTH!
