I know this sounds STUPID, but I have a phobia of things that go fast, swerve side to side, are in the dark or as my husband says................anything I dont have control over. I don't do Soarin, Roller Coasters, Splash Mtn, Kali River Rapids, wasnt real comfortable on Kilamanjaro Safari. I can go to the ocean and never step foot in the water.........

We've been to Disney 7 times, and I want so bad to be able to step out of my box so that I can see the story behind the ride.......

Don't push yourself so bad that it disrupts your time in the World. It's not stupid at all.

Have you tried the teacups? It takes some control away with the ride moving, but YOU control the cup spinning (or not).

2 words - People Mover. Except that it is dark when it goes through Space Mountain.

Make sure you never go on Dinosaur then. Are you able to experience Haunted Mansion? It moves slow, but is in the dark. Just wondering how bad your phobia is.

I can do Haunted Mansion & Spaceship Earth.....(now that I have been on them & know there are no drops of anything)

I second the idea that this is something to work through with a trained therapist. What you describe sounds pretty severe, beyond just a list of attractions in order of escalating thrills.

Consider also that you might want to go somewhere else besides WDW. You wouldn't go mountain climbing 8 times if you were afraid of heights and hated the cold. If the stuff at WDW scares you too much, try going somewhere that you won't be scared.

THats the JOY of DIsney is that there is something for EVERYONE!! Im not scared when I am there, I just dont do those things........I ride things like HM, Buzz, TSMM, Peter Pan, Go to the Shows, Characters, and am a people watcher.........so I dont have a hard time enjoying myself.

So what can you do at WDW? From your original post, it sounded like you couldn't do anything at Disney that moved, but you have said that you have been okay on Spaceship Earth, Haunted Mansion, Peoplemover, and Peter Pan's Flight. Is there anything else you were able to do?

I didnt say it couldnt move............just not FAST like Test Track.

First off, be sure you understand when you're dealing with "control issues" and when it's something else. I have major control issues -- but I also have issues with nausea. I'd like to knock it off on the control issues front, but I don't want to take any chances with the nausea one! Some people just don't like loud noises, and although they may have related control issues, all the effort in the world isn't going to make those loud noises any more pleasant for them. I don't like getting slammed around because I have been in pain for the rest of the day; people may call it a control issue, but I just seen no point to being physically miserable for the sake of a few minutes on a ride (although I might do a ride I considered marginally risky late in the day when I knew I could just go home after). And so on.

You can also experience a fair percentage of the "story" with some rides by ducking out the "chicken gate," if you haven't -- and doing that can also tell you something about whether the story appeals to you enough to make the necessary compromise to ride it.

Research helps control issues considerable -- watching a "ride through" video on youtube, finding out everything you can about the ride on the Dis, and just generally getting a pretty solid idea of what the ride entails can all help.

If you've been to WDW seven times, you're likely going again -- why not tackle one single ride your next trip? Figure out which one most interests you and give that one a chance. If you've got control issues, the first time on any ride you're wary of may not be enjoyable -- but the second one, after you really know what you're getting into, might be, because you're more able to relax enough to get the appeal.

Finally, I agree with the first poster who said "don't push yourself." Sometimes "control issues" keep people from things they'd enjoy if they could just relax, in which case pushing yourself to enjoy it is counterproductive. But sometimes people who have "control issues" also just don't happen to like rides that appeal to most other people, so don't feel obligated to try a ride just to battle your control issues. I'll do rides with my kids I would never do on my own, but those are rides I can "take or leave." But if I really dislike a ride, for whatever reason, I'm not going to ride it. After all, I'm on vacation, too! :)

I would "push yourself" just far enough to try one ride that really appeals to you, and see how that goes. If you aren't crazy about it but didn't really hate it, try it again. IF not, you've still pushed your personal envelope a bit.

You also said swerved side to side, was in the dark, or that you didn't have control over. That's the part that confused me because you wouldn't have control over anything at WDW. Now I get that it was hyperbole. No big deal. My advice would be to watch some various ride videos on youtube first. That gives you an idea of what to expect on each of the rides you are interested in doing. Then, I would start slow and work my way up. For example, I might start out riding Peter Pan's Flight because it is simple and something you have done before. Next, give Pooh a try because it has a bounce scene that is a little bit more aggressive than just flying around in Peter Pan. Go on the tea cups but don't spin them at all. Then try it spinning yourself a little. If you can handle that go for more. If all that can be handled, go on Barnstormer. Then 7 Dwarfs Mine Train. Then do Thunder Mountain. Save Space for much later since it is fast and in the dark. See how you do working your way up. See what you get to and keep in mind you don't have to get over this all in one trip.

We are going again in April.........we have Fp for 7DMT and I would love to go on it, and have read how smooth it is, and kids 3 & 4 LOVE IT, and blah blah. I've watched youtube videos of it, and Im just not sure I could handle it. If those kids (my own included) can go on it, you would think I could handle it at 44. UUUGH! Just STUPID!

Basically if it gives you an adrenaline rush, I dont care for it. EEEK

I didn't say it couldn't move............just not FAST like Test Track.

But you did say you can't handle the dark, which suggested that you couldn't handle things like Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan and Spaceship Earth.

But you did say you can't handle the dark,

I should rephrase that............as long as I KNOW there are no drops, or we wont start going like a bat out of heXX, Im ok with dark. But I HAVE TO KNOW FOR SURE!

If heights alone don't bother you then you should try Soarin' and if you feel uncomfortable just close your eyes. The thing actually barely moves at all, with the feeling of motion coming form the large projection screen only. You can take a peek at the movie to get an idea and maybe ease into it.

You would be sitting an a stationary chair a bit high off the floor though if that's a concern. You can sit in the back section to be at the lowest elevation (ask a CM if they can queue you there). I wish you luck in stepping outside your comfort zone.

I have been on soarin..............once we got up in the air, and the movie started & it felt like we were MOVING..........I had to cover my eyes til it was over. Didnt like the feeling as we flew over the ocean, grand canyon, and that golf ball. Ugh..........I have a feeling there is little hope for me! LOL

I am admittedly not the most sensitive to things like this, and I hemmed and hawed around before deciding to post. When you say it makes you uncomfortable or you don't like it...what does that entail? Do you just shake it off and carry on right away, or do you need a paper bag and 10 minute sit down break, or are you ruined for the rest of the day?

Depending on that, I would say...just try it. Just try something. If you don't like it, then you'll know. You can't let the fear hold you back.
You're able to talk about this open and honestly, you know you may be perceived as being irrational for these fears, so that is a positive sign!
Logically, you know you're safe, right? So start small with Dumbo. Try the Barnstormer or 7DMT...they're short rides, so even if you hate it, it's over almost as soon as it's begun.
To me it seems like you WANT to do these things, but you're letting your fear hold you back. Don't give in, just go for it. Life is short, and you don't get anywhere by not trying.

You're right, Disney is about more than rides pixiedust:
(Like, I just watched Celebrate the Magic on YouTube with tears running down my face...so much, much more to Disney)

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your vacation and have an amazing trip!! And if you do step out of that box come back and let us know!!! Best wishes either way :)
