Help me step out of my box

I'm waffling over the 7DMT for many of the same reasons. Right now I'm thinking I'll give it a shot next time we're there. This does not even remotely mean it'll necessarily happen. :p

Didnt like the feeling as we flew over the ocean, grand canyon, and that golf ball. Ugh..........

Have you done and did you like Star Tours? Personally, simulators are Right Off my list. Some people's brains just don't seem to process motion simulators right, resulting in everything from dizziness and nausea to nervousness and fear. If that's how you're wired, not a whole lot you can do, although I know some OTC motion sickness remedies (taken hours before) work for some people, and I've even heard of people who talk to their doctor and get mild tranquilizers and that works (the brain's still confused -- it just doesn't worry about it!).

Eh, rides are optional in life. So is WDW. So is swimming in the ocean for that matter.

I think the bigger question is, is your daily life at home impaired in any way by phobias or fears? If so, that is something you would want to seek professional help for.

If you enjoy your trips to WDW as they are, then don't worry about what you aren't doing and just enjoy what you are doing :)

ONLY IF THERE IS A MOUSE IN MY HOUSE!!! THEN I GO BALLISTIC :)

I know this sounds STUPID, but I have a phobia of things that go fast, swerve side to side, are in the dark or as my husband says................anything I dont have control over. I don't do Soarin, Roller Coasters, Splash Mtn, Kali River Rapids, wasnt real comfortable on Kilamanjaro Safari. I can go to the ocean and never step foot in the water.........

We've been to Disney 7 times, and I want so bad to be able to step out of my box so that I can see the story behind the ride.......
Maybe start with the mine train? It has a dark ride portion, but it doesn't last long, and it is the smoothest coaster I've ever ridden. If DD is tall enough on our next trip, I would take her on it without hesitation (she'll be 3). The ride as a whole is very short, though, so if you do end up not liking it, it is over fast. The theming on it is wonderful :)

Seconded.

The 7DMT is short, cute, and very smooth. Not like a typical coaster at all. There are no severe drops- I mean, the drops are present, but they aren't fast, rough drops. It's all very smooth and not too fast.

Have you tried the great movie ride? No drops at all. There is darkness, but it's not "immediate" darkness ie your vehicle is pretty visible. And one look at that car and you know you won't be doing drops.

In the same park, have you done the Jack Sparrow experience? It kinda feels like a dark ride, but your two feet stay on the ground the whole time.

How about Figment? That's a tame ride.

Living with the land is a slow boat ride

The seas is dark, but it isn't jerky at all, and it similar to HM in intensity.

Jungle cruise should be fine

carousel of progress should be fine.

Everything else you named already. I would suggest you try maybe something like the carpets in adventureland, or dumbo, rather than the teacups.

I do not know your reasons but..think its OK if you don't want to step out of the box! I'm not a big thrill seeker and I'm not a fan of big roller coasters especially those that go backwards and turn me upside down! LOL! They don't make me sick but scare me to death and I decided a few yrs ago it was not fun being scared to death! LOL! I don't know if anyone has suggested this but if you do step out of the box don't do the biggest thrill seeker ride there is. I have been known to do just that, going from doing very mild rides to the most daring! Then I jump back into the box after being scared to death! LOL!

I stepped out of the box at Universal Studios last fall for my husband. We were by ourselves and did not have anyone to ride with but each other. He doesn't like motion rides on account of getting sick and I of course am not fond of his favorite ride, the roller coaster. LOL! But we decided to both give in a little or we were not going to get to do anything! LOL! I actually did better and lasted longer than him! LOL! He Got Sick! He can ride the fastest roller coaster there is, turn upside down and go backwards and never get sick but... He can not do motion rides for some reason! So we didn't get to ride a couple of rides that I wanted to. It just wasn't worth it! I felt really bad for him! I don't get sick I just get scared! So just do what makes you comfortable, if something new, that isn't to daring, and won't make you sick is my advice. Disney has a lot of different options and everyone can have fun no matter if you want thrills or not!

I'm a giant baby when it comes to rides. Huge! I'm terrified of heights and anything that has drops. There is no amount of money that you could pay me to get on a Ferris wheel or a big roller coaster.

With that being said, I actually went on and loved Test Track and Big Thunder Mountain. I checked out the drops on YouTube prior to going and gave it a try. It was fun. There was one little dip on Big Thunder that I didn't love, but I survived and rode it again. The dip on Test Track is very small and didn't bother me at all.

I also have to close my eyes while on Dumbo and the Magic Carpets. I'll probably never be able to do Soarin' though. Start with something small and see how it goes.

I have been on soarin..............once we got up in the air, and the movie started & it felt like we were MOVING..........I had to cover my eyes til it was over. Didnt like the feeling as we flew over the ocean, grand canyon, and that golf ball. Ugh..........I have a feeling there is little hope for me! LOL

Your feelings are perfectly normal and nothing to be ashamed of. If you don't enjoy something, don't do it. If you think it is detracting from your quality of life, you should look at getting medical professionals involved. I doubt a doctor will prescribe a course of treatment for you just to ride a Disney attraction, but if you are finding yourself unable to do things you want or need to on a daily basis, help does exist.

Good luck!

If you can do Test Track and Big Thunder mountain ..then you do pretty good! You sound like my husband who can do those but you will never catch him on anything that goes round and round, like Dumbo, Magic Carpets or Teacups! He loves roller coasters Mt Everest and Aerosmith, but... you will never catch me on those two!

On the soaring ride I find that I cannot look down because it ruins the ride for me, seeing that I am not really that far off the ground and not going anywhere! LOL! It may help you, unless your fear is seeing your off the ground.

During a trip to a thrill ride park with my in-laws (sister in law, her husband and their daughter), my sister in law made such a huge deal about not being able to go on any rides at all that her daughter (7 or so) was reflecting that fear too. You could literally see that she wanted to go on a ride until her mom said she wasn't going on it, then she got scared too. It broke my heart for that little girl to miss out on all those fun things because her mom didn't want to ride the equivalent of the teacups... Or anything for that matter. I mentioned it to SIL and she was at first appalled that I thought so but then she decided I might be right, for whatever reason.

She went on ONE roller coaster. She definitely picked the wrong one to start with. She was miserable for a lot of the day after that. But her daughter went on every single ride the rest of the day. SIL explained to her that she wasn't really scared, but some rides made her feel sick (panic attacks) and she didn't want to go on more but that most people were ok and if she wanted to ride, any of the other adults would be happy to join her.

I promise I know what anxiety is like. And I know there are some rides that just don't feel good to me (I love coasters but I HATE rides like TOT with a sudden, visible, highly anticipated drop). But when my son asks to go on TOT with me, I'll go with him. I will tell him I don't really like that kind of ride and it's more fun for me to do something else instead. Take baby steps. For your kids. And for you too. You don't have to enjoy every single ride the entire time. But you'll feel a lot better knowing your kids saw you having fun and trying new things. You can always say no to that ride next time with a "I wasn't a big fan of that last year. Why don't yall go without me this time and I'll be waiting for you with Mickey bars when you're done?"

I would skip Dinosaur. I would go on the Safari ride, SOARIN, TT, Movie Ride, TSMM, Buzz LightYear. Maybe Pirates....

I hate roller coasters and I have never felt I have been missing out. IFm those are the majority or rides you are missing then maybe don't worry about? I have never done splash, TOT, etc and that is fine with me.

I do love big thunder mountain though. And I know a bunch of people who hate soarin b/c of the height.

With the invention of you tube I would think you can view a ride and decide if you can do it.

Thanks guys. Luckily, my kids are 22, 19, and 9 and their dad is the "fun one" and will go on whatever they want to do with them. If he isnt available, one of the older 2 would go with their brother.

There were four other adults on that trip that all offered to go on rides with her. But sometimes kids want to be with Mom. And pick up on WAY more anxiety than you think you're putting off.

How that anxiety is presented matters. If it was just the kid picking up mom's anxiety, your niece wouldn't have wanted to go along once mom said she would. From what you've said, the problem was what mom was actually saying more than the anxiety itself. Putting the anxiety in terms the kid can understand ("Makes mommy sick, but there's no reason to think it'll bother you") helps tremendously. I always presented it as being the same as preferring different foods; "not to my taste, but you can't know if you like that sort of thing or not until you give it a shot." Most of my kids are more sensitive to that sort of thing than I am; eldest son will accompany him out of a sense of manly responsibility, but none of the kids seem to have inherited hubby's love of coasters.

Admittedly it's true some kids just won't go on a ride without mom -- often the same ones who insist they like some food they clearly have to choke down, just because they know it's mom's favorite! :D My kids all grew out of that sort of thing long before we got to WDW, but I'm not sure I'd treat it any differently.
