Help me find some people in my area that I share interests with. I've done on-line searches but you never know which sites are safe or not.

Besides going to churches or bars what do you suggest to get out and meet people?

Basically I just need to make some friends that live closer to me.

How about some classes? Great way to meet people with common interests!

Thanks Angel! I do plan on taking a photography class this summer.

Oh, I have always wanted to do that!! Good for you. :cheer2:

Unfortunately, in my area, it seems that most people "keep to the themselves" and even if I go to a class or something, most people don't want to do more than say "HI."

I've really had the best luck finding friends where I work. I work with a large group, so that is easy enough. There's usually two or thee people I have something in common with.

volunteer work! Really, this is how I've met people. We were a Navy family & that's what Mom & Dad swore by & it's worked for me.

Most states will have a volunteer bank or you could call the local library, hospital, historic park/house or church. Most places will be so grateful for any help at all. You can get as few or as many hours as you feel comfortable with.

I help run an historic site, so I know of what I speak. We have people & young kids from all walks of life. We offer history or architecture, antiques, research or public speaking--you're sure to find something you can enjoy & folks who share your enthusiasm! :thumbsup2

Many of my aquaintences over the years, enjoy volunteering in hospitals. Reading for patients, running a waiting room beverage station for friends & relatives. Taking patient or visitors trays up to them. gift shop work etc

there are ESL volunteer programs & adult reading programs to work with also~

Hoping you find a passel of friends!

Thanks Christine! Unfortunately I work in a small office but I have made a few friends there as well.

I have finally decided that I need to expand my horizons and get out more. As scary as it is to do that I know I have to.

What about a gym? You can do something for your health and meet people.

I go to one but usually it is only me and the lady working when I'm there.

ditto on the volunteer work
Working on something like a habitat house would be good.
I am a docent at a history museum -it is fun and I get to meet some people

Oooh, also amateur theatrical groups, they always need people to paint scenery, pass out playbills, put up posters, work with costuming etc-
Animal shelters, planetariums, aquariums--

Golf courses, tennis, squash courts(take some lessons if you need to) can match you up with others of like ability & you'll meet a range of nice folks. Around here we have open admission garden clubs & nature clubs (hiking, kayaking or canoeing, birding etc).

Yes, I was very nervous also & it does take some courage to walk in amoungst strangers, but you will find something that's a good fit & it'll open up a whole new & richer life for you! :sunny:

I met my best friend and a bunch of nice people when I joined a book club. You really get an idea of what people are like when you listen to their comments.

community theatre is a great suggestion-we always need extra hands and can find something for everyone to help out with. you can call up a group and offer to help out. if you are handy with crafts or things like that-there are always props and costumes as well as set decorating. if you like to meet and greet-helping out as an usher or at a snack table is a great way to get involved.

the nice thing about community theatre participants is that because they get involved with a new group of people for every production, they have a habit of being very friendly and initiating friendships very quickly-so even if you are a bit shy you can count on someone approaching you.

I second community theater. You met all kinds of people. The last play I was involved in had everyone from a cashier at the local grocery store to a state senator's wife, plus everyone in between. You don't have to perform onstage. You could help build sets, sell tickets to the show, help with advertising, etc.

We have a young man who started voluteering for the same reasons, to met people. He was so painfully shy when he started out. His first play, I never heard him speak during rehersals (he was part of the backstage crew). Opening night, he happened to be backstage exactly where I had to come offstage & change costumes in about 45 seconds. O.K., maybe not that quick, but it was fast! Anyhoo, this young man got a bird's eye view to the whole event. The woman who was dressing me looked over her shoulder during the change & said "Welcome to the theater!".

He is now onstage performing & has no problem talking to anyone!

The other postive of theater is community theater actors throw some of the best cast parties after they perform & if you worked on the play, you are invited. I won't tell tales out of school, but they are fun! Sbella

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. I joined a book club 3 or 4 months ago and have made some wonderful friends (I just joined because I love to read and wanted to talk to people about books, the friends was a bonus). We've done other things such as going to book signings and we went to see The DaVinci Code after we read it and plan to do the same for Memoirs of a Geisha. We go out to eat afterwards sometimes.

Now that it's getting nicer out, we plan to have a few more "social" outings as opposed to book outings. It's been a lot of fun.

I also joined the county women's softball league and have made several friends through that who are really great.

Thanks everyone! See I knew the DIS was the place to ask.

I have decided to sign up for two classes and the community theater thing sounds good as long as I can do behind the scenes stuff.
