Help me decide which DSLR camera

I am looking to buy a new digital SLR camera. I am looking for no shutter lag, 8-10 mp, interchangeable lenses, good battery life and easy to use. I have been looking at the Cannon Rebel (various models) and a Nikon. I want a camera that can take good action shots at my kids soccer games as well as still shots. Any advice? There are so many options. OH I might add the price range up to about $600.

A couple of Nikon options, from buydig:

D40 2 lens kit (18-55 + 55-200 NON VR) w/ "free" 4GB SD card and two instructional DVD's: $600.00

D40 1 lens kit (18-55) w/ "free" 4GB SD card + 55-200VR lens: $670.00.

IMO, the VR version of the 55-200 is worth the extra $70.

Hopefully better. I haven't come close to the potential of the camera gear I own. Still taking baby steps. I'm going to see Mickey next month so we'll see if I've learned anything since the last visit!

Any of the entry level cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, and Olympus should all fit what you say your looking for.

Go to a store and play with them, one of the brands will simply feel better to you, either for the way it feels in your hand, or the intuitiveness of the menus.

Cameras don't take good photos, it is the photographer that takes good photos! While it is easy to upgrade your equipment, it is much hard to upgrade your mind. Good photos require time and effort. Are you prepared to make that investment, too?

As well are Pentax, Samsung, Sigma, and Olympus. Basically, there is no such thing as a bad DSLR. There are just quirks that benefit some and irk others. It is very important to handle them to make sure you like the feel. Then once you have it narrowed down to a few, research the brands extensively to make sure it is going to satisfy your needs as you grow. Also consider if the brand is going to be within your budget.

Well i can't compare to bradk, gdad and yekcim but i would like to say yes i take good pictures already. I have won best in show for a couple photos i took. I always have a camera with me so i guess yes i already am committed. The camera i have now does take good photos but i am looking for one without a shutter lag, interchangeable lenses as i said above. I take a lot of sports pictures and this camera has too much shutter lag.
