I bought a Sigma 24-70 mm f/2.8 for Nikkon a month ago. Occasionally, when I take a photo I get an all black image. No light whatsoever. Most of the time, it is fine. I don't think it's the camera (d300) because this doesn't happen with any other lens. I contacted Sigma today to ask about the problem and got a message machine, so I am awaiting a call. In the meantime, I thought I'd ask the Dis experts.

I bought this through Amazon. If in fact it is damaged, do I go to Sigma with the problem or Amazon?

Thanks for your help!

highly unlikely its a lens problem. If anything...it'd be a body problem. Can you post an all black image straight from the camera?

The black round circle on the front of the lens is called a lens cap and most lenses are optimized to work better when they are removed. :)

Here's one of the photos. I snapped off 4 just like this until one came out with an actual picture. And LOL, the lens cap was definitely off ;).

I spoke to a support person from Sigma today, and they think it might be that the aperture blades on the lens are sticking slightly. I also called Amazon, and after pleading my case with them, they are going to replace it with a new one.

Sigma's diagnosis sounds like it could be right, considering your EXIF reads that you shot this with f/0. That'd be some extremely shallow DOF!! ;)

Just got an email from Amazon saying a new one is on the way. :cool1: Extremely nice of them considering that I still have the old one. I'll pack it up and ship it back ASAP. Kudos to Amazon. :thumbsup2
