Today we were diagnosed with H1N1, we leave in a week. Someone please tell me we will be better before our flight Saturday morning??? :(

:sad1:

The suggested period of quarantine is only 7 days if that makes you feel any better.

glad you are going Saturday and not Friday.. (I'm in there on Friday) :) hope you get better quick...

What a shame I hope you are all better for your trip. On the bright side I guess it would be better to have this now then next week. Good luck & feel better! Linda :)

yikes:scared1: well at least you knocked it all out at the same time if that is a silver lining??

Just curious did they actually test you all ?? The reason I ask is I live in the South and they for the most part aren't testing anymore around here, they are just assuming that you have it , if you have any of the symptoms..

Hope it's mild and get better soon... Please don't take offense to this, but you should consider wearing masks on the plane for a variety of reasons to proctect yourselfs and others..... IMHO

Actually, my youngest was sick, really mild-then I got sick, pretty mild, just really tired, then I get a call today that one of my 9 yr olds and my 7 year old are sick (same symptoms) and need to be picked up, so I called the doc (they really arent seeing people, cause i already asked when I got sick) and told them "Look, I know you said to just assume, but we are leaving on a plane in a week, and I really want to know and get the antiviral meds if we do have it" so they scheduled an appt for my 2 kids (they only had 2 apts opened.) Well, they both have it, so they are treating the whole family.

Total for dr apts and meds w/ insurance-$280.00 + missed work. Nice-right before vacation. :( oh well :)

Oh and we will definately be wearing masks-the doc said we wont be contagious after about 2-5 days, but I dont want to risk it, plus risk getting sick again. It's spreading like a wild fire!

CDC is saying that you have to be quarantined for 4 days after the last day of fever. So if you can get fever down...you should be great! Did you ask for Tamiflu? I would at this point.

yes we are all on meds. I dont have a fever-and the doc said you dont have to have a fever to have this. My kids' fevers are only 99-100.

How was the H1N1 diagnosed? currently ERs within our hospital system are no longer sending out the H1N1 test. We have elected only to go with the rapid Influenza A and B nasal swab test. We are encountering alot of medical professionals diagnosing H1N1 simply on symptoms. The nasal swab can be only 60% accurate and that presents a problem. Current research shows that 90% of the influenza A positives are indeed H1N1 however if you are being diagnosed because if it walks like a duck. Tamiflu is currently one of the only drugs being perscribed, however it is a drug used only to shorten the duration and should only be used within the first 24 hours of symptom onset, even then it can only decrease the duration by 1-2 days. Certainly any suggestions you recieve here should not be used to replace your personal physicians opinion, however rest, fluids, maybe pixie dust?

I am still yet to hear of any H1N1 tests actually done here in our area as well. I would bet they got a positive for Influenza A. I may be wrong, but last I knew it was a 24-120hr turn around for a true positive on H1N1.

You are 8 days from flying, I would make sure everyone stays well hydrated, watches lots of Mickey Mouse cartoons and gets rested to go.

Don't hit it too hard your first day or so, no reason to stress the kids systems out so they get sick again.

Best of luck, keep us updated.

I am really sorry you are all sick. It sounds like you have a good amount of time to recover though. On the bright side, if it is h1n1, at least you'll be done with it and you won't catch it during your trip!

I am sorry you are all sick but, yay you won't have to worry about catching it down there! ;)
Drink LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of fluids. You should almost be able to float to WDW. Also remember fruit like bananas are very easy to digest and imo that helps you to heal faster when your body doesn't have to do so much work digesting. (Although I am sure you all aren't that hungry anyway.)

I'll share our story with you, for what it's worth. This happened about 4 weeks ago.

I picked my son up from school on a Friday and noticed right away he wasn't well. He was crying and he had "the look" in his eyes. So when we got to the convenience store, I checked his temp (yes I keep a thermometer in the car). It was over 100, so I called the doc and managed to get in to see him within 30 minutes (miracle). They did the nasal swab and he was positive for type A influenza. Doc said most likely H1N1 since it was still too early for regular flu. We started Tamiflu at 7:30 that same night. The first 36 hours were the worst. By Sunday morning, his fever was gone. He kept a lingering cough for several days, but it didn't seem to bother him and he never needed the medicine for it after Sunday. He was back at school by Wednesday.

So in our case, symptoms were very mild. I think the key was getting the Tamiflu in him so fast. My only advice would be to get plenty of rest, and maybe alter your park-touring plans to allow for more downtime than you originally intended. You may find yourself wearing out more quickly. Hopefully you will have a mild go of it like my son did.

I am high risk-I am a diabetic and have thyroid disease, so they did do the test and diagnose them. Thank you all and turkeymama that makes me feel better. They do seem to be very mild symptoms, in fact when given ibuprofin and temp is down, they keep trying to go play (of course, we dont let them) I am hoping that they will be up and running by Mon, Tue at the latest, as I really dont want them missing more school then needed, since they will be missing a week already for vacation (well, three days, they have thur/fri off that week.) According to our doc, the only strand of Influenza A going around right now is H1N1, so if that comes back positive, they are 99.9% sure it's H1N1-of course this is just from my doc, maybe some of you are more informed than her?? It's possible, but I'd still rather be safe than sorry. Today was my kids' first day being sick, so they are within 24 hours. I have not had a fever at all, only cough and lathargy, but they said since im high risk to take it anyway as preventative (since i didnt have fever, i may still get it-no way of knowing if i had it and dont know, etc) and Scuba-I know not to take suggestions here over my doc's-i didnt ask for suggestions either-I asked for people to please tell me we will be better by then (just to make me feel better, like good luck)

Thanks again for all your encouragement.

Just one more positive note. My family supposedly got it, too. We were treated with Tamiflu as well and it knocked it out of us right away. So, hopefully, that will be the case with you, too. Once we got that in our system, we felt MUCH better. My DH never got any symptoms. And, we feel like we were lucky in a weird/twisted sort of way to get it out of our system and out of the way before we go to WDW. The doctor told us that we would not be contagious after being on the Tamiflu for 3 days (including the day we saw the doctor). So, I think you will be good to go. One point, the cough my DH developed did hang around for a little bit but it was no big deal. Get well soon and have a blast!

We all "probably" had H1N1 here last week. High fevers (over 103) in the kids, extreme fatigue in all of us. The kids got sick really fast--when from a little whiny to 104 degree fever in 4 hours. With meds (tylenol and tamiflu for the kids) the fever stayed around 101 for 3 days. It finally broke on day 4, but the cough is still fading a week later. DH and I didn't have a fever, but every muscle in my body ached--to the point where picking up a mug of tea was painful.

That being said, they just missed 2 days of school (plus were sick all weekend). They are still pretty tired a little earlier than normal at the end of the day, but are otherwise fine. If we were going to Disney tomorrow, I wouldn't be worried, I'd just take it a little easy and not swim unless it was really warm.
