First off, I should let you know that I booked our Feb 19-22 Wonder cruise with DVC using points. I have a dilema - I completely forgot to book my insurance BEFORE the penalty period began (which is 60 days out). Now, I'm not so concerned about the points being covered (although it would be nice, that's not my biggest issue). I'm really concerned about having medical coverage while on the ship - i.e. if anything happened and somebody needed to be airlifted off castaway cay (god forbid, but it's something to think about). I have heard that this can run upwards of $10,000. Can I purchase medical coverage through AccessAmerica???? I'm not too worried about pre-existing conditions - I just want to make sure if there is an emergency, we are covered while we are out of the country. I have always purchased insurance for the cruises before - but for some reason it slipped my mind this time....any advice would be greatly appreciated....Thanks!

There is a company out there called Travel Insured International that offers a "Post Departure Protection Plan" That will give you Emergency Medical and Emergency Medical Transportation coverage. I work for an insurance agent in PA so I am noy sure if this is Nationwide but their website is www.travelinsured.com According to their brochure the cost is based on the length of trip and your age.

I would assume that other companies do this as well.

Hope this helps!

FIrst, check with you health insurance carrier. Some policies don't cover anything outside of the US. Other policies cover everything including a medical evacuation if needed. Only by reading the policy (Oh No) or calling your carrier of benefits department at your job can you find out whether or not you already have this coverage. Actually, a helicopter evacuation off the ship can run as much as $25K! Yup, that's big bucks.

kcashner, is right, check with your insurance carrier.

Most, but not all Blue plans do provide major medical coverage outside of the U.S.

Effective January 1 2004, my carrier, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama began providing coverage for medical evacuations!!

Every policy can be different. Check with your carrier just to be sure.
