Okay, some of you may remember I am a relatively new college grad. working as a restaurant Manager. I have been doing this for about six months now and I really dislike it. It isn't all I thought it would be, the stress is unbelieveable and I am making myself sick. I have lost about 25 to almost 30 pounds in the last few months because of this. I know it is still a new job but I am ready to starting thinking about what I can do for work.... I have a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Administration. I don't not want to work in a restaurant anymore. I want a normal job M-F 9-5 or so! I love people and I am love paperwork and organization... what would be a good job for me?

I am curious what types of jobs people have on here and what types of jobs would be a good, decent starting place for a college graduate with my degree?

Thanks for letting me vent as well..... :)

well I think finding a 9-5 job in your area might be a stretch but I think there have got to be several things other than restaraunt jobs.

What about Hotel event planning? That takes a lot of organization!

How about hotel administration?

Maybe something for a Cruise line?

Anyone have any other ideas?

I agree that event/party planning would be a great job..lots of organizing and paper work involved in that.

I'm a trainer for a supermarket and my availability is 7 days a week, 24 hours a day!! Sometimes I wish I had a set schedule, but I make my own schedule and if I need to work 4 10 hour days I can and if I need to leave early alot in 1 week, I just schedule myself for 6 days and leave a bit earlier everyday.

Thanks for the input guys! I think Even Planning would be great but a lot of events are on the weekends and evenings..... unless I worked in the office cordinating everything and passed "the Sale" off to a cordinator or something!

The part of the restuarant I hate the most are the hours. I am looking into institutional food service, like a company that runs their own cafeteria for their employees, they are general only open when the company is! I also hate the pressure of never knowing exactly what is expected of you... I thrive on control and I feel like I have no control..... I want to know what my job is and excell at it, not have a variety of random things thrown at you on a daily basis... Make senese?

:) Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate it!

Sorry you dislike your job so much.:( But if it is making you THAT stressed out, get out! You are way too young to be stuck in a job you dislike that much.

I was also going to suggest hotel work. Do you have some really nice hotels, resorts in your area? I would look into starting out in junior management in one of those first.

The hotel event planning that binny suggested sounds real good. How about being the co-ordinator for receptions, meetins, conventions? That sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Travel administration. Any large companies near you where their executives, or brokers (our brokers travel all over the US and foreign countries all the time....we have 2 full time travel co-ordinators) or sales people travel a lot?

If I think of anything else, I will check back in.

In the mean time {{HUGS}}, and keep us posted.

Note to self... get job as restraunt manager to lose weight... ;)

Sorry you are having a bad time... you will find something that suits you... you have a great degree as there are so many diverse jobs in the restraunt/hotel field.... why dont' you try looking at http://www.hospitalityonline.com/ . DH looked there when he was looking for a job as a sous chef.

I don't have any advice for you regarding the job, except that you may have unrealistic expectations of work in general. I don't talk to too many people who aren't stressed by their work and it seems like few people are working a 9-5 job. Ask physicians, vets, teachers, nurses, politicians, salesmen/saleswomen,...the list goes on. Most careers financially reward (and not even then) by the severity of the level of work being performed. If you're looking for a significant income coupled with a straight 40 hours/week, no weekends or holidays, well, I'm not sure many of those jobs would exist. I'd like to know which ones there are.

hi, i am sorry you dislike your job. trying to find a 9 to 5 job is gonna be hard to come by i think, i just started a new job and i love it,the hours are kinda tough but i can live with it i also would love 9-5 but that is not going to happen where i am i work from 8am to 7pm or longer depending whether we are busy or not and i work 3 saturdays out of the month 8am to 6pm and i hate working saturdays but you gotta do what you gotta do BTW i am working as a automobile salesperson at our local ford dealership.
I hope you can find a job you enjoy, it is out there you have just got to find it. GOOD LUCK

Just remember that the "hospitality industry" is open 24/7/365. Unless you are management, accounting, or an admin you don't work 9-5. This is the reality of this business. Go in with your eyes open.

How could you work in tourism and NOT work for Disney? I love hotels... used to want to own one, so managing one would probably be the entry-level job I would look into.

I just can't believe someone would go to college to manage a restaurant! Food service is the pits!

You might want to try your local convention center or visitors bureau. You might be able to find a something there. I agree with some of the others about the hours - you may have a tough time, and have to pay your dues before you get 9-5.
Best of luck!

I worked in restaraunt management for YEARS! I hated every minute of it. finally I literally threw in the towel and turned to a temp agency. They found me a job within my current company. I was able to go into a finance company because of my management background.

I have been here for 5 years as a permanent employee and I love every minute of it!!

Lesson #1: When choosing a career make sure to look at things like working conditions/hours in that career before making the decision.

I am not trying to make you feel bad but it always amazed me while I was in school that people would major in an area and then never consider how a career in that field would fit in their lives or the type of work they would have to do at the entry-level. I have friends who majored in retail management that hate working weekends/evenings. Friends who majored in English literature that are suprised they can't find a job in their field. Friends who majored in journalism who can't understand why they work at a small paper covering the local water treatment board meetings and are not at the NYT writing front page stories.

As people have mentioned working 9-5 is difficult to come by in many fields and in the tourism/hospitality arena it is probably darn near impossible.

If you don't like your current career you can try to find entry-level work in another field but it might be difficult depending on where you live. Another option is you might want to consider going back to school and getting a degree in a field that might afford you more opportunities at a regular M-F 9-5 type position.

How about your state's welcome center? The pay may not be all that great, but I bet it is pretty close to 9-5 and it is within your degree field. My SIL did this when she was just out of college and she loved it. Not sure what state you live in, but if it is a touristy state, I bet they have jobs promoting tourism.

You spend so much time doing your job -- you're right in deciding that you need to find something that you don't hate.

Don't necessarily limit yourself to what your degree is in. Look at the classes you took and think to yourself how they could be applied to other areas.

Have you contacted your College's Career Services department yet? Some schools are really good at helping their grads obtain interviews.

Best of luck to you!

:D

Thanks everyone. I hear everything you are saying. I know that finding a 9 to 5 job is going to be really hard. I am not bent on staying in my field so that should open things up a little.... I have worked in restaurants for years and I knew what I was getting into. A lot of things have changed for me recently, healthwise, and I think that may be impacting my feelings about my job now.

I am thinking about looking into sales. Any input or advice on that? My father is in sales for a pharmucutical (sp?) company and Derek, my bf, works in sales for a high tech company....... Entry level opening, just somthing to start... Iknow I'll have to take a pay cut, it's ok! :)

Thank you everyone, I am having a really hard time with this. I feel like I wasted six years of school on nothing....

I think you're in the wrong field for a 9-5 job. Even if you get a job at a hotel, being new you'll probably be the one on the night shift. Event planning could be interesting. But that won't be 9-5 either.
