Hello I've posted in the disbility thread before but usually about Diabetes. Because i've read many of the threads I know ya'll are full of excellent advice. I am a 3rd and 4th grade teacher at a very small private christian school. I have a student that has been just recently diagnosed with ADHD a anxiety disorder and they also think high functioning Autism but are not sure yet about that. The only suggestion for the classroom they could give me is to make a picture chart of what he has to do and have him check it off when he finishes. Right now I'm having a hard time just getting him to sharpen his pencils much less getting any classwork done. I have organized his desk and I write his homework down daily. If anybody would be willing to share what works for their child I would appreciate it. We do nothave special ed teachers or assitants so I'm on my own. Thanks for any help.

One thing I found works is to give the work in "chunks." A page of 25 problems can be overwhelming, but 10 might be manageable. A Work buddy (if you have a bright, supportive, non-judgemental friend) can be great, too. When I taught 2nd--I had a gifted child who loved the challenge of being my aspie student's buddy. (I had an "ask a friend" policy in place for the entire class--except for tests!)

I posted a schedule for the whole class. They knew it was flexible, but it helped them all to be better organized (and me too!) Without knowing the student, it is difficult to guide you--everyone is different.

Oh, the parent is a great resource. After all, who knows the child better than the mother!

Wow this is tough with no support! I will need more info like what is it just theat he does not sharpen his pencils or is he lost?

Unfortunatley mom is just as lost as I am about how to help them. I have a schedule up even though it seems to change daily and we talk each morning about what we are going to do. In the mornings they have to do two things fill water bottles and sharpen pencils. These are written on the board as well as his desk. He will come in put his folder in his mailbox and then seems to be almost confused even with quite gentle reminders it still take almost an hour to get one pencil sharpened and him at his desk. I do have a student that would be willing to help him. I'll have to talk with them tomorrow. I'll also try breaking work down. Even when I give him two pages to do that seems to be to much. Maybe one at a time or even half. Thanks.

Lissa,

Sounds like he needs to get an official diagnosis, not just ADHD. Mom needs to get one so he can get the support he needs! If he is ASD you need help that is for sure!!!! There is no way he is going to make it in your class by yourself and with 20-25 children! Not sure what your ratio is? Perhaps talk to your IST to get it moving along for you! Good luck!! I hope it works out for him and you.

Fortunately I only have 12 3rd and 4th graders we are a very small Christian school. Unfortunatley that also means no extra staff like Special Ed teachers. What is an IST? His doctor called to talk with me today and even though he could not tell me it sounded like we have a deffinet diagnosis of high function Autisum. He said mom would talk to me tomorrow. Today was a disaster though. The other students were taking a test. I had given him his orally. During the test he was running all over the room screaming and disrupting the others. Now I love this little boy and want him to stay in my class but right now I'm really overwhelmed and I'm sure his mom is to. Thanks for listening.

IST is Instructional support team the lead for the special ed dept. The only problem with a Christian school they have no support for you at all. Many parents have to hire a parapro themselves for there child to stay in there. In addition, in all fairness to the other students you may have to talk with Mom and request that she hires the help you need or she will have to enter public to get the help!!! to take I admire you for wanting to take this child on yourself. You must be an awesome Teacher!! Good luck!!!
