I am so not happy right now! I´m 31 and I´m getting my first cold sore. Ever.

I noticed this little red bump and felt a tingly feeling and was told it´s the beginning of a cold sore. How should I treat it? I looked it up and went to the drugstore and got a paste that´s supposed to work but two of my friends said it doesn´t work that well. Someone suggested toothpaste.

Can anyone tell me what the best remedies are? How long should it take before it´s gone?

If you have it available get some Abreva. You can buy it over the counter here in the US. It is a tiny blue tube of cream. Apply according to directions and it will shorten the episode. There is no cure since it is a virus.

Abreva or Zovirax, the best! Catch it early though.

I don´t think that Abreva is sold here in Iceland. What I got is called Vectavir but I think that Zovirax is available too.

If you catch it early enough, plain old chlorine bleach can sometimes shut it down.

Put a little in a small glass vial and use a clean cotton swab to dab undiluted bleach directly on the trouble spot several times daily. Obviously, don't lick your lips -- undiluted bleach shouldn't be ingested if you can help it. This stings like the dickens, but works about 60% of the time if caught early.

The only thing that works for me is Denavir. I get the prescription from my dentist. The little tube is very expensive but well worth it....cuts healing time down considerably.

If you can't get the medicine, try putting warm, wet tea bags on it. Supposed to draw out the "poison."

Have you tried it? I think I might try it tonight ;)

Ouch! Not sure I´m brave enough for that one. Thanks for info though :)

Yes, I've used the tea bag trick! Works well. Also sooths some of the throbbing. But cold sores do take a while to get rid of. Abreva is great, if you can find it in your neck of the woods.

None of the above EVER worked for me. The ONLY thing that works is a prescription for VALTREX. Your doctor would probably approve it over the phone.

I have suffered from cold sores for many, many years. I have tried all the tricks in the book, along with all the suggestions that the previous posters mentioned.

GOOD LUCK!!

That's the only thing that works for me too! :thumbsup2

I get cold sores from stress and just a couple of weeks ago cleared up the last of the ones I'd had for well over six weeks! I used abreeva and Valtrex at the end and it really cleared them up the quickest for me this time. I also used the Neosporan (sp?) cold sore stuff and that seemed to help dry them out. Just be careful - my lips will all dry out (and then crack and bleed) if I get the cold sore stuff on them constantly. Then you have the problem I currently have of dried out spots all over your lips.

Good luck! Try not to worry about it - it may make it worse! :goodvibes

I also use Abreva and it worked womders...Also at night I sometimes use toothpaste. Just dab some on the cold sore and it will help dry it out.

Since this is your first one ever, just know that you can infect others (as well as other parts of your body). Don't touch the sore and then touch other parts of your body (think lower region). Don't share any eating untensils or cups. I wouldn't kiss anyone either.

Cold sores stink! Lysine also is supposed to help.

I switch off between Abreva and Carmex(I never let it dry out) and swear by L Lysine(it's by the vitamins), I just pop those L Lysine pills ( I take like 5 a day when I have a cold sore) and it's gone in no time-that has been the biggest help. I've tried everything else and nothing works like those.
