Help!!! Did I make a mistake?

And, by the way, you can never use points at Value resorts. You'll use as many points at a moderate resort that you would use for a one bedroom. The few deluxe resorts left are really point expensive. And you pay $95 to book that stay, just like all the non-DVC stays.

this was one of the main reasons we opted not to buy (and we were SO close).. we LOVE the moderate resorts, they are our favorites, and we actually really like the value resorts. we prefer outdoor corridors, like the cheery themeing, etc.

OP, we could throw tons of pixiedust your way, but you already got that from the DVC salesperson. You came here asking for facts and you got them. You should be grateful that these DVC owners will share the facts with you and not just blow smoke.

you can always count on deb&bill to be honest and truthful. we may not always agree, but she has my utmost respect ( ok, bill does, too;))

Ok, I think I need to clarify a few things. For starters, my husband and I are both attorneys and we are knowledgeable about time shares and contracts etc... We also just got back from a stay at kidani and loved every second of it. When we were there we took the time to meet with a rep and we talked to others who are already members. Everyone had nothing but great things to say. My husband and I love to travel and take two over 5k trips a year (not to sound like i am bragging, but just want to tell you that we spend a lot of money on vacations so a time share would be beneficial to us). We like to go all over the world, but really feel like Disney is a place we would like to call home now that we have a family. One of my good friends has travelled the world using her DVC points and that was an important aspect in our decision.

When I found this site, I am seeing so many negatives about the DVC and I'm stunned. I even thought I would get so much positive feedback when I posted and instead I am told to back out of my contract. I basically want to know what you all love about it. Just looking for justification that this is THE RIGHT vacation club to join as there are so many others out there.

I also didn't think resale was the way to go b/c I read that you can't use your DVC to travel to non disney resorts if you bought on the resale. (?) And as I mentioned I would like to travel all over the world on the RCI network using my DVC points. But again people on here are saying that it isn't worth it. Isn't that the whole concept behind "banking" points in "the world." (i.e. so you can travel all over). We also got a really good deal as Disney was running a 20% off special for the 20th anniversary. And I am a consumer protection attorney and I am very skeptical of most companies these days (unfortunately).

I just want to know why you all love this club ... the negatives on here are really troublesome to me ... i.e. no dining plan perks, no park passes ....etc. Why did you all join and why are so many people so happy. I have been told by so many "this was the best decision I have ever made for my family" ...why????????

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I think this site really keyed me in on the confusion of the DVC (when to travel, how to use points etc.) and think I will refer to this site all the time. But I'm not sure why everyone is now telling me to cancel my contract!!!!

I hope this gave more clarity to who I am and why I joined. I will join a timeshare ... but is DVC the right one?

We joined in 2009 and have loved it so much we have added on once and plan to do so again. and again and again ....Lol. We know have a daughter and we are.coming up on her 3rd trip to Disney! It's wonderful and we love DVC. It sounds like you knew what you were buying but some negative Nancy's have you doubting yourself. Remember, some people will always find something to complain about. Take a deep breath book a vacation soon and enjoy!

Welcome Home !!! DH and I purchased our 210 points direct for AKV in June 2009. We love our decision and have never looked back. One thing about the DVC forums are you will get the truth and learn from it. I use my DVC timeshare more effectively because of the DIS. We never have a point wasted.

I to notice a lot of negativity on here .

Most say to buy resale , that makes sence if you only go to disney every time .

To me I bought into this to also take advantage of rci , I also plan to cruise dcl with my points distipe what others say here about points on dcl .

Once my kids are grown and aren't wanting to go to disney we can go other places . I recently joined also and was thinking of using my first set of points to go to willamsburg VA . I realy just excited and want to go back to disney , but I wouldn't have bought in if it was only the dvc resorts .

I am optimistic that I will enjoy my dvc membership . How you said $5k vacations I am thinking with dvc they will be $2500, witch I also look at as after the 5th vacation now it's like getting a free $2500 per year to vacation . Thats the main reason I did it to get free rooms after 5-6 years .

I am disappointed in the amount of rci places avalable nightly , cause I would be nice to do a few weekend trips to some of thoughs places . And the conciaire rooms are to much points, witch also eliminates a hotel in nyc where I live and dc somewhere I was looking to go . I figured if I needed to use points they would be good weekend trips . On the fly . Although I learned that you can lay up points in rci up to 2 years

Just to be clear, you CAN use resale points for RCI. It's only the Disney Collection and Cruise Line you can't use resale points.

With DCL, those points are renegotiated every year. So what you use now, won't be the same next year. Not like the DVC resorts. What you use this year is pretty much going to be the same unless they do a reallocation and that is limited. If points go up somewhere, they will also go down somewhere else, unless like in the case of AKV where they changed some of the savanna view villas to standard view and BLT where they changed some of the theme park view to standard. So, in both those cases, the number of standard villas increased, while the nicer category did go up a bit.

I think that the "negativity" is actually frustration due to knowledge. Many of us have been owners for many years and we have experienced the changes that Disney has made to the DVC. We also know that DVD marketing isn't always a true representation of the product and we hate it when people are taken advantage of.

Disney can change the rules and policies when ever they want. They can take away point use for DCL, RCI, non owned resort access and even the animals at AKV.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I think what may be perceived as negativity is more like realism. The people who frequent this particular board are, generally speaking, huge DVC fans. There is a large number of owners, and happy owners at that. However, we are also realistic about the drawbacks to owning DVC (nothing is perfect) and we feel the need to highlight these drawbacks alongside the benefits of owning DVC. The fact is that DVC is not the perfect product for everyone. If we see a case where, based on our experiences, we feel it might not be a good match for the poster, we say something. While sometimes it may come off as a bit negative, the intent is to help.

I hope you do! :)

I'm not sure I follow your thinking here. Care to elaborate?

Basically what can be perceived as negative is simply those of us that learned the hard way, tying to prevent someone else from that lesson. :thumbsup2

I really really like DVC. Why? Because it lets me stay in a deluxe room cheaper than paying the rack rate. Everything else is just a perk that might not even be there next year.

Happiness with DVC is simply a matter of having realistic expectations.

Thank you for all of the explanations regarding the points! I actually think I understand everything, mostly.

As you can see, my husband and I decided to keep the dvc contract and we already are loving our decision. We understand that we spent more money buying direct but we are ok with that decision for personal reasons. Buying more points on the resale might be an option.

We are actually planning out of vacations for the next few years and we might travel on the Rci network next year (yes might be a bad use of points). If I do that would I just deposit my points this September? Or do I still bank them? I guess I'm wondering if I can use banked points right away for Rci travel or do I have to bank them, wait until they would expire, then deposit into Rci.

We are thinking of going to cabo, any suggestions?!

Thanks for the warm welcome!!

Congratulations and Welcome home. Enjoy your points and let the planning begin.

Sorry I didn't read all the responses, but I am pretty sure that if you join RCI yourself (pay for the membership), you can still put your DVC points into there and use a RCI resort with your points.
As far as I know, this is not possible. The only way to exchange DVC points for an RCI vacation is to do so through Member Services. And, that's true for most of the mini-systems---for example, Wyndham owners have to go through the Wyndham portal, and cannot book and deposit weeks into a "regular" Weeks account.

As you can see, my husband and I decided to keep the dvc contract and we already are loving our decision.
At the end of the day, that's all that matters. As I think I wrote upthread, lots of "old hands" in the timeshare world started out with a developer purchase, and nearly all of them are still very very happy with their purchase. I can tell you that, for my family, getting into timesharing was one of the best decisions we've ever made.

My realistic expectation is that getting a room with DVC will be cheaper than paying rack rate for the same room (over the life of the contract). My hope is that it is cheaper than paying rack rate with a discount.

Now I just bought 3 annual passes and saved $450 so that was an added bonus, but one that could disappear at any time.

I have no interest in trading through RCI or using points for cruising, both these could disappear at any time.

I like going to WDW and I like spending weeks at time per visit since we have so far to go to get there. DVC was the most economical way to pay for what I wanted.
