HELP! Cruising pregnant (and flying)- what am I not thinking of? UPDATE and thanks!

congrats! I have cruised while pregnant and I did bring a note from my doctor which the cruise line did end up needing. I refused the scanners at both the airport and when getting on the ship. Its not a problem, you just have to get the pat down. have fun!

I cruised pregnant twice late last year at 6 and 17 weeks. It was fun, but I was a little queasy most of the time. I was queasy on land, too, so might as well be queasy on a cruise! ;)

They didn't ask for a note, or even how far along I was, and I was visibly pregnant at 17 weeks (hello, third pregnancy). Somewhere along the line I clicked a box online that said I wasn't entering my 24th week at sailing, so they take your word for it.

There are lots of "rules" for eating and drinking while pregnant, so you just need to decide which ones you feel matter. This was my third pregnancy, so I have done plenty of research on the actual risks. I ate a turkey sandwich most nights for dinner from room service because it was all I could stand to eat. Yes, there is a slight risk of listeria from lunch meat, but I had to decide: starve or "risk" it. Most nights in the dining room I requested potatoes for dinner. That was all I could handle in the MDRs. But our server was great. By night 4 or so of our 7-night, he was bringing me plates of whatever potatoes were on the menu that night :) But by 10pm, I was back to starving and ordered a sandwich.

If you are cruising out of port Canaveral, the last night is the worst for motion. If you have morning sickness, be careful what you eat on the last day, no matter how you feel during the day. A hamburger was not a wise choice for me. Enough said.

On a related note, know where the bathrooms are near each restaurant. Food smells were the worst for me. Again, enough said.

We love Mixology and had a group planned from before I found out I was pregnant, so I just paid and went along. I would have one taste of the drinks I wanted to try and then give them away. If you want to make friends fast, that's the way to do it ;)

If you have any specific questions, let me know. Despite the morning sickness, I still loved cruising, and I hope you do too!

Prior to my cruise, I did a lot of research on anti-nausea methods without medications and ended up bringing a lot of things to try. Ginger gum (ordered from Amazon) worked the best for me but only lasted for a short time. I also tried preggo pops, preggo drops, and sea bands (which seemed to help some but hurt after a couple days - maybe the pain is supposed to distract from the nausea).

I think different things work for different people. Good luck!

Thanks, I'm hunting around in a last minute 'panic' for anti - nausea methods (not easy now that the nausea really hit me), and don't really have any yet, I will try to find Ginger gum, it's too late to order it... I'm taking the Sea Band (haven't tried it yet), and I have a strong standby med from my OB...

Does anyone know, if they have ANYTHING Ginger on board? For example Ginger Lemon Tea?
If not, I may bring some tea bags, since I'm usually a fan of teas.

Thanks for all the great advice! Yes, the bathroom locations are probably important! :scared:

I will definitely check out room service this time! I hope I will be able to enjoy the dining experiences despite it all!

I think a lot will depend on the weather. I've had huge differences in weather in past cruises, and that did make a difference -without being pregnant...
I imagine this will be amplified now! We are cruising out of MIA, but the weather is looking scary right now... :worried:
Crossing my fingers for improvement!!!

Well, they had it on our recent cruise:

My doctor's office is so nice - they will attach a super short note to email (week of pregnancy and OK to travel), because there's not enough time left for snail mail! Yes, forgot the scanner in the ship's terminal! Will get pat down...

I cruised pregnant this past January. I brought a doctors note on the office letterhead just in case but no questions were asked. I also packed seabands bur only needed it once. I would just recommend comfy slip resistant shoes. I slid several time on deck in sandals.

Thanks! I have been pretty good (not slipping in my shoes) other than a certain flip flop.. on that note, thanks, I think I will leave that one at home!

Just returned from a 6 day WDW and 4 day Dream last month. I was 17/18 weeks during the trip with TWINS. There is being careful and then there is "being careful." I opted for the latter. I rode aqua duck 5 times, ate whatever I wanted, sipped on dh's alcoholic beverages, and even spent a few minutes in the hot tub (if you start to sweat you have been in too long). I am now 21 weeks and the monsters are doing fine. I went through the metal detectors without flinching. Doc said there was no safe sea sick meds sadly, BUT I was totally fine which surprised me. My MS came back after the cruise at WDW (bad incident on a bus one night, don't ask ). I would request a MS med from your doc just in case and try "preggie pops." I had so-so experience with them, but many women swear by them. I also carried around one of those menthol sniffer things you use for colds. It looks like chapstick but you sniff it. I never need it either, but I figured if I got into a situation where a smell set me off, I could mask the smell with that.
The one thing that surprised me was how big I was. The theater seats were not comfy (apparently my hips had already separated) and the seat belt on the plane only had a few inches of extra length. If we had traveled any later, I might have needed a belt extender! :sad2:. But I do have twins in there and have been showing since 7 weeks, so I suspect those issues won't effect you.

We have had some issues staying pregnant with a second but I found out yesterday I am due in June. Hopefully I will be late first trimester on our dec cruise. We fly often and I was actually on a plane yesterday. Don't worry about it, you will be just fine.

I'm glad you posted this though because I am wondering about the same type of things. I want to be able to enjoy this cruise with my husband and our 5 year old! Congrats to you!

Hey, do you sail on Sunday? We are on that cruise! :)

YES!!!

Who is in your party? :)

I've tried to join the meets, but never got a response on the DIS thread OR the FB page... and then I got too busy to worry about that! :)

Thank you! (It was the same here!)
Congratulations to you, too!
I can report back after our trip, if you like! :)

Congratulations on your twins!
I'm not sure what your doc was referring to "there are no safe sea sick meds", as they are generally the same as the anti-nausea meds, and luckily there are several that are "Class B", like Zofran and Reglan, and that's as good as it gets!
Everyone has a different medical history, risk factors, and past experiences, so there are many reasons for different levels of 'careful' !

Preggie Pops - still haven't gotten them, but they are on my list! :)
Menthol sniffer: the mere thought makes me a little sick right now...

I'm glad that your twins are doing fine! It sounds like you had an awesome babymoon!!!

I wasn't talking about zofran and other pregnancy prescribed drugs (I think you should grab a small prescription just in case in fact). My go to sea sick medicine is traditionally Bonine. Doc said no because of a small study with severe disabilities of the babies. My husband has a prescription for it for vertigo, so we have a lot of it around, but I had to skip it this trip.
Thats sad that menthol is on your no list. It really helped me through some of the smell trigger days. Maybe a small bottle of your favorite perfume? I was very smell sensitive early on though, maybe you are luckier than I on that front and won't need that sort of intervention.
