Heinz changing ketchup formula

Apparently they don't remember the fiasco that was "NEW COKE".

Word on the street is that this will replace the original recipe, not be offered as an alternative (though not mentioned in the article). We'll see.

Less salt is a good thing... problem is it still has HFCS in it!

Although I grew up a tried and true Heinz ketchup girl.... we switched to Trader Joe's brand a few years ago. We don't taste much of a difference, and it costs a little more (not as much as the small bottles of organic Heinz) but it doesn't have HFCS so I feel a bit better about it!

I have a hard time believing the current recipe is actually the original recipe. I'd be willing to bet they used to use sugar instead of HFCS, just like all the soda companies.

There's the other issue. I was always under the impression that it was the SUGAR (or HFCS) in the ketchup that was the real "menace". I just hate all the tinkering in the name of health. People need to police themselves...portion control.

Ketchup is one of the very few things I am super brand loyal to! I wonder how this will taste!

I will only buy heinz. I used to think that cutting salt made no difference but it does. The less sodium campbell's soups are gross! I never really tasted the sodium in them before but when you try and eat one without it, the flavor is missing.

Salt is more a flavor booster than something you taste in processed foods. So we shall see how this goes!

'NEW coke' was just a ploy to be able to change Coca Cola, for the cheaper and for the worse, without directly admitting it.

No way is Coke good like it used to be!!!!!!

For those that want Heinz without HFCS, you can by the new "Simply Heinz" which is made with plain old sugar and then Organic Heinz which is just sugar.

darn, I was hoping this was about taking out the HFCS. OH well, I would probabl kept buying the organic anyway - it tastes better. I know some people buy it just to avoid the HFCS though.

That's a sure bet - HFCS wasn't in use 40 years ago. It didn't come into widespread use until the 80s.

I switched to lower sodium spaghetti sauce a while ago and my family didn't notice. I don't use ketchup, and my family only does a little, so it doesn't bother me. But then, I eat the low sodium soups too. I grew up with a dad on a low sodium diet, so I don't cook with salt - my family is used to adding their own to what I cook.

Healthy Choice used to have a low sodium ketchup and we really liked it! It was actually pretty good! Like you, we also have a low sodium diet and I do not add it when I cook or have it on the table.

I agree. Did they even have HFCS 40 years ago? I'm sure when they switched to HFCS, they didn't make any announcement. They just switched.

I get some spaghetti sauce from Trader Joe's that has no added salt or sugar and love it. You can taste all the vegetables and they taste like they came right out of the ground, which is how they should taste.

I imagine that if Heinz had just changed the recipe and not told anyone many people would not have noticed.

This is NOT funny. I was at a restaurant a couple of weeks ago and their ketchup was NOT Heinz- although it was in the restaurant bottle so I don't know what it was but it was VERY vinegary and gross.
