Heelys - Should I let the kids use them

I won't buy them for my son, because I am very strict that he wear a helmet when he rides a bike, skates, skateboard, etc. It only takes one fall to ruin a child's life forever, and I have seen it happen. It doesn't matter how careful the child is; noone can anticipate the moves of others around them, or if there will be a rock in the path that will send them flying.

I would say its a no-brainer that it wouldn't be a good decision to let them skate in the park, whether they are allowed or not.

Totally agree. Our kids do not ride bikes, skateboards, scooters, or skate/rollerblade without a helmet. We told them a broken arm or leg will heal, but a head injury could cause permanent brain damage.

When our son begged for them, we said no because he would have to wear a helmet and if he's going to get a helmet on and go skating, he might as well just use his rollerblades.

And I really don't understand why people post a question, then get all defensive and upset when they get answers they don't like.
OP, you asked "Should I let the kids use them?", then you got upset that most of us said no and gave you the reasons why we had that opinion. It's not just about whether there is a Disney rule, or as you put it, a Disboards rule. It's about whether they are dangerous and inconsiderate to others when used in a crowded public place.

Not to mention I heard a couple of cases of verbal "crowd rage" where people would vent to their travelling partner that the next Heely that ran into them was going for an unintended heely off of the nearest mountain.

I would feel the exact same way. I cannot stand those stupid shoes. I have almost been run over in the local stores more times than I can count. I am so tempted to trip the little buggers but I would never hurt a kid. The parents should know better than to let their kids roller skate in a store or amusement park. Not to mention that their own kid could get seriously injured!

Let me just state that I don't think that kids that wear Heeley's are hellions. Rather the opposite- I think it's great that they want to be active. I just would prefer that they are used in a safe and proper manner. I just don't think people realize how dangerous they can be.
Just wanted to edit to include that! princess:

Thanks Eric! That is exactly the reply I thought you would get. I also bet it is the reply some other posters gets but we will probably never know. While you might get different answers from 20 different CMs it is rare that you get different answers when you email. Of course we all knew what the answer was before you gave it!

I don't know if they're all the same, but my grandsons have Heelys, and the wheels are removable. So they could wear them, say in the parking lot, then take them out in the park. I have to admit, the first time I saw them I thought how terrific they would be in WDW, of course, that would only be if the whole family had them and could zip around the park. I, on the other hand, would quickly be on my rear! :rotfl:

Now there's a genius idea. As it is, people without heelys constantly ignore common sense and safety by choosing to walk directly in the path of oncoming traffic despite continued pleas from the parking CMs to walk in front of the parked cars and out of the way of the moving vehicles. And you want to add people on skates to the mix so they can dodge in and out between moving cars? Remember in a crash between a human on heelys and an automobile, the human usually loses and the driver of the car who probably wasn't doing anything wrong is traumatized.

Should I let my DS(10) and DD(7) use Heelys at the Parks?
There was a thread the other day saying that they were not allowed.

According to state law, they're also not allowed in parking lots.

oh please oh please oh please don't let this thread turn out like the other one did! I believe it was closed earlier today.

Bottomline: heely's are a no at WDW--in the parking lot, in the park, on box, on a lox, and never on a fox. I will not eat green ....oh sorry...got into a bit I suppose.
