Hi: For all those who go to wdw the last couple of weeks of august. Are you folks who love the heat like my hubby. Or is it not that bad.

I would love to go then, but even in a trip down to wdw in april the temps were up in the low 90's, and Im guessing not as humid as august, I could not tolerate the parks in the heat I had to leave them after 2 hrs.

We ended up just doing the resort/pool thing all day. My bloodpressure shot up and I looked like a lobster, not from sunburn, but my face just turns red in extreme heat/humidity.

Just wondering how others tolerate the heat/humidity.

Deb.

this will be our first time going in August - we usually plan Oct
DS13 & I will be there for 2 wks -

the days we're at the parks at opening we'll stay for a lunch PS then plan on pool/Disney Quest/not returning to parks
the nights we're at the parks we'll hang around the pools until late afternoon when we leave for the parks

in other words we're only planning on 1/2days at the parks - not planning on parks at all midday - I bought us APs this yr

My DH hates this kind of weather too, but surprisingly he was very upbeat during our late August trip last year. It is absolutely hot and humid even early in the day, but we found that the crowd levels were very manageable in the mornings. You definitely need to plan frequent breaks in places with A/C... for instance, we planned lunch PSs in "cool places" (e.g., Tusker House at the AK), saw shows, shopped or took a swim break in the afternoon. Expect thunder showers daily (or at least lightening alerts anywhere from 3 pm on), though we were lucky that on most days the storm either passed us by or was there and gone. (Others have reported Augusts with much rainier weather and of course last year saw quite a few hurricanes too which we were luck to avoid...) Do carry water bottles, spray fans and we can recommend those neck cooler thingies (soak them in water the the beads inside really do retain the coolness for hours somehow).

I think it all comes down to setting the right expectations... while I'd love to tour during the cooler months our schedules just don't permit it. So we made the best of the time we had and just appreciated the fact that we were at Disney. Only you can decide if the downsides of heat and humidity would really detract from an otherwise magical stay. Good luck deciding! :wave2:

Most who come down in August are from other areas of the country that are used to the heat and humidity. If you thought April was bad, August will be unbearable by 10am and continue that way all day until the late afternoon heavy thunderstorm. This is also the middle of hurricane season also.

You definitely have to get out early, go back to the resort and then try again later in the day.

I, personally, love the heat and humidity when made to choose over cold weather any day.
Ideally, 70-80 degrees with lower humidity works best when in WDW. It's the combination of the heat/humidity and the crowds/lines that gets to us in late August. We went mid-Sept one year and it was just as hot and humid as August (it never fell below 85 the entire week we were there) but the crowds were cut in half and this made a huge difference.
We are going in August this year after many trips during late Oct-early Dec. My kids are older now and it's become too difficult for them to miss school. When they were younger things were so much less complicated....lol
But Goofy's Muse gave some very good advice. We freeze a bottle of water and then take it to the parks with us. It stays nice and cold as it thaws. Also, the mister fan works great. Our plan is to get to the parks as soon as they open and stay until about noon. Then head back to our resort to nap/swim and return around 5 or 6 pm. Also, scheduling a PS at a nice cool sit-down place in the afternoon can help as well.

We were there the second week of Sept. last year and it was hot and humid! Even the nights were bad. We are from Long Island, so we a little something about humidity, but even with that preparation it was still bad. It rained every day around 4:00pm for 1/2 hour and it just made it steamier. We found that getting up early and calling it a day around 2 made it bearable. The parks were so empty that you could do just about everything in a couple of hours.

We were there Aug 19 - 29 last year. As soon as I walked outside I felt it. I was soaked all over in a matter of minutes - just standing still waiting at the boat dock in the shade!! I love WDW enough to do it again and I will - as I have my oldest starting high school this year. My husband said he would not come with. I couldn't even talk him into staying by the pool during the day and parks in the evening. He felt so yucky during that trip it is just not worth it for him again. We did the spray mister fans, ice, tried to take pool breaks, but it was HOT. I thought the crowds really weren't too bad. That is why I am willing to do it again.

Good luck,
Lives4Disney :earsgirl:

We went one year during the first week of August and are going back again this year in Mid August. My advice is the same as others - go to the parks in the mornings and evenings. I did want to mention that we found Epcot very nice during this time of year. In Future World there is so much to do indoors. For this trip we are planning to stay at the Yacht Club so we can spend a lot of time at Epcot and enjoy the pool!

Being from Florida, I will tell you that the humidity in August is a killer! I am from South Florida on the east coast so we are use to the ocean breeze. In Orlando, you are kinda in a "bowl" as I like to call it...2 coasts on either side and not a breeze in sight!
Plan on spending your days at the resort in the pool and the extended night hours at the parks.
Enjoy!

We went last August from the 15th - 25th. I'm 240lb man. Needless to say I don't like the heat. It was in the 90's every day and very humid. Having said all of that, I didn't complain once. I was at the happiest place on earth :-)

I agree completely!

Also as the other posters had mentioned, we used misters as well. They really helped!

FYI: August will be hotter than the 85 degrees you experienced in September. Crowds will be less than peak summer, but will not drop until after Labor Day the first Monday in Sept.

If you are susceptible to heat, and it sounds like you are, I would avoid August. We've been several times in August. My brother won't go in August anymore. Too miserable, he says.

My girlfriend and I took her twins last August. The kids did fine as did I. But she got heatstroke and was very sick for about 24 hours. Also, we were there for Hurricane Charley, so hurricanes are a possibility. And, there are usually drenching downpours at least once a day.

We went early Sept. and DH loved it, so we're trying the last weeks of August this summer. I don't like the heat (lymphodema in one of my arms, and it tends to swell in the hot weather), but after the first day, I didn't mind the heat/humidity. I will say this to the ladies - bring extra bras! LOL! Ours were soaked by midday! So either plan on doing laundry at night or bring extras. And make sure everyone in your party wears a hat with a visor and sunglasses. It all helps to cool you off. Drink plenty of water.

I'm a little nervous about the rain - we had NONE for the four days we were there in Sept. Amazing, as it was right between two of the hurricanes.

As a Floridian 30 some years, I call August 15th the hottest and muggiest day of the year. Stay hydrated, I've seen the wheelchairs come out to rescue dehydrated park goers, take breaks on rides with A/C. Another good trick is to browse in the Emporium (gift shop on Main St.). Just expect to sweat, you'll still have a great time.

Sammie,
I don't know ? We've been to WDW during August 3x now ('00, '01 & '02). We usually encounter 85-92 and this is exactly the same we experienced in mid to late Sept in 1995 when we went. In fact, we were in WDW for 2 weeks in '95 and it never fell below 90 the first week. I went the last week in Sept of 2002 and it was 85 pretty consistant all week. I just don't personally feel there's much of a difference between the two months (except for the crowds !) from my experience, but thanks for the head's up. :flower:
If you live in FL, I'm sure you've seen it all. But hot/humid summers don't bother us, because it's like that here in Philly during July & Aug. So when I go down to FL in Aug, I've already sort of become used to it. We savor the heat....try to store it up for the long, frigid cold winters ! I always say to my husband......if we could just bottle some of it up to use from Nov through March it would be great ;)
Regardless of the temp stats, I think it's safe to say, we will all be hot and sweaty in August. The end of Aug is a little nicer crowd-wise, because most of the southern schools and some colleges are back in session. I always feel not having to fight crowds and long lines make the temperature so much more bearable.

we've been a few times in august.. and it is definitely hot hot hot.. being from alabama originally, you'd think i'd be used to the heat.. and honestly, i don't have as much of a problem as my husband who grew up in jersey.. with not that much heat and humidity..

i believe my dh said it this way.. "going to disney in august is like having a baby.. during the moment you swear you will never go again in august, but time passes and you end up right back in disney... in august.." :rotfl:

Hi Everyone:

Great replies. That answers alot of my questions. As much as I would love to go to wdw in august, I think I had better pick another time as I really cannot tolerate the heat. Hubby would love it, nothing bothers him.

I would end up not being able to go into the parks and just hangout in the airconditioning. Thanks for all your input it helps. When I was younger it didn't bother me that much. Now that I have this bloodpressure problem it just does me in.

You are definitely correct that average temp for the last week of Sept will be around 85, however the average high for August is 92 and is usually higher. If you got anything below that in August you were really, really lucky.

I'm going in early September this year and everyone is telling me how bad the heat and humidity will be. But the nice thing about wdw is there are so many air conditioned places and shaded queue areas.

The worst for me was being in DisneyLand in August. Very hot (105 degrees) and dry, but very little shade over the queue areas so you are out there exposed just about all day.

Get an early start and take an afternoon break (either visit the pool or nap in you nice air-conditioned room).
